WINTER AGAIN.

STORM STRIKES CANTERBURY. GARDENS SMITTEN BY FROST, i Suburban residents of Chrisfcchurch awoke yesterday morning to find that il .Tack Frost" had paid an unwelcome visit and had cut down the spring growth as with a'sword. Hopelessly withered tomato plants and beans and blackened potato tops clashed the hopes of many a keen amateur gardener, while for the market gardener the frost is literally disastrous. In Papanni and Heathcote, so i'a r as can be seen, the damage is not so great as would be expected, as there was a Elight breeze, but other districts have not fared so weii.

From figures relating to November frosts compiled at the Christchurch Observatory since 1905, it appears that there have been only, two frosts in November of greater intensity than that Yesterday morning—lo.B degrees on November 22nd. 1913, and 12.4 degrees on Novemlwr 9th, 1018. The damage done to the vegetables and fruit is bound to be reflected, in futiire market prices, and as the wheat season is late it will probably damage the crop. The frost followed a storm that laid a heavy covering of snow on the hills of Canterbury, and which swept over Christchurch with thunder, lightning, and hail. The heavy thunderstorm! burst with great violence over North Canterbury, and several places report damage from lightning. IN THE NORTH. •' (fbess association tzlzgbahs.)
