SPORTING.

TURF GOSSIP. Acceptances for tho Methven Racing Club's Annual Meeting close on Monday. C. Emerson, out of seven rides at Tirharu yesterday, won four races, and his mount, His Majesty, also returned a second dividend. Wbarncliffe, who finished third in the Otaio Hurdles at Timaru, is a Rood type of jumper, and only needs a little more experience before paying his way. After the Flying Handicap at Timor u yesterday, C. .Emerson, rider of Miss Minerva, was called before the stewards and cautioned for unduly crowding Eaton Bells in the straight. • • Tho Wingatui trainer F. Shaw introduced a half-brother by Saxby to that one-timo good sprinter Reval. He races as Katun a, and although not prominent in the Spring Stakes, should be heird of in the near future. An enquiry was held after the.Tesohemaker Handicap at Timaru yesterday into the trouble which occurred going out of the straight. Some of the riders stated that the horses shied at a man with a camera near the rails, and no action was taken. • • • One of the features of yesterday's racing at Timaru was the success gained, by horses ibred by Mr E. Gates. They included Frisco Mail, "Winkie's Best, Miss Minerva, and Gay Queen. All four are descended from Lady Lillian, who in 1903 won the Great Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps doublo for Mr Gates. Almoner, who has not raced for nearly two years, was produced in the President's Welter at Timaru. He is still on the big side, but is apparently quite sound again,,and a little racing may see him add another bracket to his; list before tho Summer meetings are through. At the Eosebery Pony Races on the 11th inst., Colder* Mantle, by Solfcrino j from Grcenstreet, won the second division of the Flying Handicap. The following were scratched yesterday for the Takapuna Plate, rendering a division of tho field unnecessary:— Golden Autumn, Luxurious, Constellation, Tjetter of Credit, and Cocoanut. The following were scratched for the Cambria Handicap:—Flying Juliet and Eilcena. The English Derby winner. Manna, •who has finished racing, goes to the etud next year. His owner, Mr H. E. Morriss, who is returning to China, has transferred his interest in the horse to a private company with a capital of £20,000. Mrs Morriss is one of the company* s directors. As Manna's stud fee will be at least 200 gns, it should not take many seasons to clear that £20,000. The two-year-old Jack Point (Absurd —Margarcthe), who was spelled at "Windsor for a few weeks, is again a regular worker at Eandwick (says "Pilot" in the Sydney "Referee"). He is a Veil-grown colt, and, as he cost 1750 guineas, the Hon. J. A. Murdoch is well advised in not Tiurrying him. Most owners like an early return, but, if Jack Point is good enough, there aro some valuable tworyear-old 'races to he won in the autumn. Up to September 25th of this year, in England, 135 yearlings had been sold; at auction at prices from 10<K) ' guineas up to 12,000 guineas. Of these, 30 realised from 2000gns up to 2900gns; 14 from 30Q0gn8 to 3900gns; nine from. 4000gns to 4800gns; three from 5000gns to 5800gns; four from eOOOgns to G2oogns; one, 8200gns; on© 9200gns; one, 10,500gns; and one , 12,000gns. An American exchange of recent date contained the following:—"Man o' War's fame is spreading. Samuel D. Riddle received word from Miss Daingerfield, who manages the Faraway Farms, where the famous son of Fair. Play holds sway, of a request that had been made through. Major Fotherstonhaugh, manager of King George V. of -, .England's stud, they exchange / ' 'services between Man o', War and the King's stallion, Friar tMarcus. " Mr Riddle, delighted at the proposal, agreed to it, and he will send to England his Man o' "War filly, Maid at Arms, to .be mated to Friar Marcus, while one of King George's choicest matrons will he shipped to Kentucky to be-mated to Man e? War." death of the imported stallion, , Claro (Clarissimus—Harmonica), who was imported by Mr W. C. Douglas, ' was reported from the -Widden Stud (N.S.W.) last week. His wins in Australia included the Epsom Handicap, V.R.C. Cantela takes, *nd A.J.C. AllAged Stakes, in which he beat Whittier, Easingwold, and The Hawk in T.36J for the mile. Claro was bought by H. S., A. W., and A. T3.. Thompson in the autumn of 1924, de- * livery being taken after fulfilment of his Randwick .engagements. The first of Claro's foals made their appearance tMs ; season (says the Sydney "Referee"), arid are of such good type that there was no difficulty in prophesying that he would be. a stud f success. It is some little consolation for the Messrs Thompson that he , was insured.

Commenting on the success of the apprentice, G. Richards, who is certain to top the winning jockeys' list this season in Englaud 3 the "Daily Express" says:—"Some of tho older men like Frank Bullock and Vic Smyth are retiring, and finished artists like Carslake. Donoghue, Beary, and Chikls have long realised that the monopoly days of Fred Archer and George Fordham aro past. Now we seem assured of a new young champion in the remarkable personality of Gordon Richards, a Yorkshire lad who can go to tho scale just under 7st, and yet has the strength of men of moro than a stone heavier. Richards is probably the greatest discovery since the days of Frank Wootton. who retired fmm tho flat world-famuos before his twenty-first birthday!" Richards up to' October 19th had won 10.3 races, been 89 times second, and 74 times third for ,the current esason. 0. Elliott, who with 89 victories, tied with Ponosihue for the premiership last season, is this sen«>n second with 79. then come IT. Wragg 69, T. "Weston 66 S. Donozfme 62, and tho Australian, F. Bullock 09.
