Herbert gave the revolting details of the living conditions of a man suffering from culosisRecently Mrs Herbert- visited a house not far- from the heart of the City, where a man who had been discharged from the Cashmere Sanatorium on account of filthy habits was living. Ho was a heavy drinker, and when be could not get whiskv, he dran!v methylated spirits. She detailed the disgusting condition ot' the house, stating that ho had used the whole place as a cuspidor, and the room where ho slept was li'jtcrod 'with methylated spiritbottles. The whole bouse was utterly vile, and when the man wanted money for drink he pawned his clothing:-. Dr. Blackmore, said Mrs Herbert', had urged from time to time that there should be a place where undesirable consumptives could be kept under proper control. .The man in question had been sent to an' institution. Mr F. Horrell remarked that the matter could be discussed at the Conference of Hospital Boards. The Rev. F. Rule said that a case ot that sort should be reported to the police. Mrs Herbert: They cannot do anything. Mr Rule: They could deal with a man who was drinking methylated spirits. Mrs Herbert: Not unless, lie was .suffering from tuberculosis. The chairman, Mr H. J. Otley,, said that the matter ought- to be discussed at the -Hosnital Boards' Conference. Mr-F, G. Norton stated that Mrs Herbert 'was to r-ommend'-.-l for niacins-the matter before the • Board.
