♦ Enchre. The weekly progressive ouclire tournament will be held in the Club Hall to-morrow night. Tho prizes offered include two hams and four orders. Valedictory. The Y.W.C.A. Social Hall -was crowded on Tuesday evening, when Ihe Ladies' Committee of the Lyttelton branch of the Association gave a farewell social to Jliss Rnth Jarvis who for the past live years has held tfie position of secretary to the Lyttelton branch of the Society. Miss .larvi.s has resigned to take up an appointment in Sydney as sports and physical culture instructor to the Methodist College. Mrs J.'T. Norton, president of the Lyttelton branch, was in the chair. There was a fair attendance oE representative local bodies. , Mr F. E, Sutton (Mayor) said he was pleased to see such a large gathering, as'the attendance alone went to show the. esteem and appreciation in which Miss Jarvis was held. It was to lie regretted that she had not enjoyed the best of health of late, but he trusted that the warmer climate would restore it. Her work in Lyttelton in th« interest ot the young women would not be forgotten, and ho wished her on behalf ot the people of the port good health and a very happy future. Mrs ,T. T. Norton said at times certain difliculties arose in connexion with the running of the club, and there had been times when members of the Ladies' Committee had been rather down-hearted. It was on such occasions that Miss Jarvis caroc forward with a smile, and gavo hope to tho committee. Many present, no doubt, when, attending such gatherings as the present, would be led to believe that it was all entertainment, but such was far from the case. Miss Jarvis's work had been to her knowledge strenuous. She hoped that perhaps when Miss Jarvis recovered her health she would return to Lyttelton. On.behalf of the ladies of the committee, club members, I and friends she asked Miss Jarvis to accept an attache case, fountain pen, and Eversharp pencil as a token of appreciation of her work in Lyttelton. Jn responding. Miss Jarvis thanked Mrs' Norton for tho presents. She said she had spent a very happy time at Lyttelton, where everybody had helped her so- much that it had been a .ioy. Sho was sure that she would be kept posted with the work of the club b.v the girls. The girls had learnt a lot about, loyalty, and she hoped the membership would increase. She appreciated the gifts very much, as she also appreciated the assistance ' they had given her. She hoped to return some day if only for a holiday. Others who spoke in appreciation o£ Miss Jarvis were the Rev. W. Nic.bol, Rev. A. J. Petrie, Kcv. S. Bailey, and Mr W. T. Lester. During the evening items were contributed by the following:—Misses H. and J. Reynolds (piano and violin), Merle Miller, Belle Renant, Mary Bald (solos), Miss N. Foster ('cello), and Miss V. Bagrie (monologue).
