WOOLSTON TANNERIES.
ROYAL COMMISSION SET UP. A Royal Commission consisting of Sir John Hosking has been appointed to enquire into the claim made by "Woolston Tanneries, Ltd., of Christchurch, against the Government for compensation arising out of the Government control of the export of hides during the war period. The enquiry will open in the new year, and the report of the commission is to be iu the hands of the Government by the end of February next. The claim has been the subject of petitions to Parliament and the Public Petitions Committee recommended that the whole matter should be referred to a Judge of the Supreme Court and this recommendation the Government has given effect to. , The company alleges that the arbitrary action taken by certain Government officers involved them in heavy losses; that while the Government action was not strictly Wrong in law, its actions were wrongful, and that the Government was unnecessarily harsh in the administration of the war regulations, thus causing them great loss.
