TOO MANY VISITORS?

MOTORS AT SANATORIUM. A discussion occurred at yesterday's meeting of the- North Canterbury Hospital Board on a clause in the rel>ort of the Public Health CommitteeThis stated that owing to the enormous amount of motor traffic running up and down the Sanatorium Hill at night, it had been decided to put gates across near tho Coronation Hospital, and these would bo closed at 8 p.m. each evening in the summer and at G p.m. each evening in the winter, and all day on Sundays. Several members made reference to tho practice of visitors to tho Sanatorium on Sundays, of leaving their cars along the road, thus endangering pedestrians. The secretary stated that Dr. .Blackmore, tho medical director, had complained that it was almost impossible, for him, on some occasior-s, to drive his car out of the grounds of tho institution. Mr W. K. Le;u!|ey said tho proposal would bo u serious matter for visitors, and in his opinion it Was too drastic. Ho Was in favour of closing the gates at night, but not on Sundays. People who were unfortunate enough to be inmates of the institution lookod forward to all tho company they could get. and he would oppose any proposal which would have tiio effect of discouraging visitors. Mr Leadley moved that the clause be* referred back for further consideration of tho proposal regarding Sundays. Tho l?ev. Clyde- Carr expressed agreement with these views, and seconded the motion, which was supported by severe. 1 other speakers. Tho chairman (Mr H. J. Otleyj said that at the meeting of tho committee, he spoke against the suggestion, but he was out-voted- Other members of the committee signified that they were prepared to give the matter further consideration. Mrs _ Roberts said it would be a hardship for elderly, women and young children to walk up to the institution from the bottom of the hill. After further discussion the motion was carried.
