YEAR TO WAIT.
FOR AUTOMATIC TELEPHONES. (SPECIAL TO "THE PEESS.") WELLINGTON, August 14. When the Post and Telegraph Estimates were being discussed in the House this afternoon, Mr Sullivan brought up the question of new telephones in Christchurch. He said the general answer to an application was that it could not be granted until the automatic system was installed. There were people who had been waiting for years for telephones. Could the matter not be speeded up? He paid a compliment to the P, and T. service generally. Mr McCombs said lie thought something could be done by running out temporary lines to Sumner and Kedcliffs, Heathcoto and Lyftelton, and the Cashmere Hills. There w r ere 500 peoplo who wanted to get telephones. A private corporation would speed matters up. Mr Coates said it would be 12 months before the automatic telephones were working at Christcliurch.
