ASHBURTON. GENERAL NEWS. About 130 people attended the card party and dance given in the East Ashburton War Memorial Hall on Thursday in aid of Miss Ronu Vincent, the spring queen nf the forthcoming carnival to provide funds for the purchase of school grounds. In response to requests made during the evening, it has been agreed to hold a similarv entertainment at some future date. The prizes were iron by Mrs C. Storrier ami Mr F. Johnston. The M.C. was Mr J. B. Osborne. The dance music was supplied by Mrs A. Mitchell (piano) and Mrs Whyte (violin). Yesterday morning broke fine, with a touch of frost. The sun shone out brightly until about noon, when tlie sky became overcast, and rain fell from about 1.30 p.m. Business at the "Eclipse All Fair," which was conducted in the Tanered street Hall by the Baring square Ladies' Guild, was fairly brisk yesterday. The various stalls towards evening were becoming very depleted on account of the demand that was being made upon their contents. On Thursday, the first day of the fair, the proceeds amounted to £IOG. A euchre tournament was held in the Tinwald Parish Hall on Thursday evening to augment the hall fund. The prizes were won by Miss D. Jones and Mr P. Brown. The annual meeting of the Ashburton branch of the British and Foreign Sailors' Society wag held yesterday, the Mayor (Mr R. Galbraith) presiding. The annual report stated that the year had been a successful one, and keen interest had been shown in the Society. The big effort during the year was the sale of work, which realised £63 13s 9d. The branch sent a donation of £SO, fifty sailors' ditty-bags, and a Christmas cake to the Lyttelton Institute. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £B2 6s 2d. The report and balancesheet were adopted. Mr J. A. Frostick gave an interesting address upon the work of the Society. He said he felt sure that Ashburton its share in the raising of the money which was required to enlarge tho Lyttelton Institute. The following officers were elected: —President, Mrs R. A discussion took place on the merits of various cultivators as destroyers of twitch and on motor-lorries v. railways. An invitation from the manager of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Co. to address a, meeting was accepted. MOUNT SOMERS. A canvass of the district to meet the guarantee for the electric service is meeting with a good response. A children's library has been opened as a branch of the adult section. Mrs Hood, sen., kindly gave a. donation, with which books have been purchased. The ladies are working; hard for the forthcoming hall bazaar, and several evenings have been held in the Memorial Hall to raise funds for the various stalls. RAKAIA. The committee which arranged the concert held recently in aid of the Rakaia School report that £l6 net was realised. There was a large attendance at the Rakaia Football Club's euchre party on Thursday evening. The prizes were won by Miss 1. Smith and Mr J. Wil-

A team from the Dunsandel Ladies' Hockey Club (visited Rakaia on Thursday afternoon and played a friendly I match with a team from the Kakaia* J Club. After a fast game .Kakaia woa by two goals to nil. Mr 3>obier was referee. The annual meeting of the Kakaia Horticultural Society was held on Thursday evening, Mr H. Mac-Dougall presiding. Betore commencing the business of the meeting a motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr r. Saunders, who was a valued member of the society for many years ■was carried.
