CANTIRBURY BOARD MEETS TRIE-PLANTING SCHEME. Tiio Canterbury Education Board met yesterda,' morning. Present: Messrs T. Hughes 'chairman), W. A. Banks, W. P. Spencer, W. If. Winsor, E. H. Andrews, J. Maze, G. W. Armitage, R. Wild, 0. B. Thompson, W. G. Govt, W. Johnston, and 11. J. Bignell. Late Mr C. H. Opie. Before the usual business of the Board was commenced, tho following resolution was carried:—"That the Board place on record its deep regret at the dentil of the late Mr C. H. Opie, whose demise must bo regarded as a distinct loss to the administration of our New Zealand educational system, and to tho Canterbury Education District in particular. Mr Opic's long and enthusiastic interest and servico in the cause of education earned for him the lasting gratitude of the members of the Board and of all friends of education. Further, that the sincere sympathy of the mem/bers of the Board be extended to the family of the late Mr Opie, together with a copy of the foregoing resolution." Appointments Committee. The Appointments Committee reported that the school at Okarito Forks had been closed bocauso of the small attendance, and that the attendance officer (Mr Blank) had reported that he had visited 18 homos, nine public schools, and three private schools, and had found the attendance satisfactory. Regarding tho appointment of teachers, the committee stated that a telegram had been received from the Minister, stating that he had been, asked by the Educational Institute to repeal the two years' tenure clause, to re-, strict special appointments, and to grant right of appeal against non-appoint-ment. Tho Board's opinion was asked for by tho Minister regarding the desirability or otherwise of taking action as suggested. It was resolved to reply that the Board preferred to allow the present legislation to stand. The following appointments were recommended for confirmation l>v the Board: —Baleairn, Miss E. M. Morrison; Belfast, Miss M. G. Hook ham; Greenpark, Mr J. A. MeLeod; Harewood, Mrs M. Hood; Hokit.ika, Miss D. M. Penlington; Hororata, Miss A. Tregenza; Eaiapoi, Miss .T. Stark; Kai* koura Sub., Mr E. B. Walshe; Kimbell, Mr W. A. H. Sharpe; Ouruhia, Miss P. M. Nicholl; Prebbleton, Miss F. G. Boyes; St. Albans, Miss F. W. Smith; Summerhill, Mr G. A. Bain. The report was adopted. Forest Tras Culture. t The Agricultural and Manual and | Technical Committees reported that at the last meeting of the Board Mr W. A. 1 Banks brought up the question of forest tree culture, and he had been asked to submit some practical scheme for the Board's consideration. This he had done, and after hearing the report, the committee had recommended that a copy be supplied to each School Committee in the district, asking for its co-operation and inviting helpful criticism of the proposal. , The report was adopted. Buildings Committee. The Buildings Committee reported that the Fendaltou School Committee's application for dedication of 12ft of school land on the western side of Clyde road for the purpose of street widening and channeling was referred to Mr E. H. Andrews and the architect, with po*i-.'r to act. Tho committee also reported that a letter had been received from the Department of Education in reply to the Board's representation regarding the committee's contribution of ono-third of tho cost of installing heating systems in schools. The report was adopted, and it was decided to protest against the Board having to pay one-third towards the heating systems. Technical School Managers. In accordance with tho regulations for the election and appointment of managers of technical schools who retire this month by rotation, it, was agreed to nominato the following Board's representatives:—Christe lunch Technical College, Mr C. 8. Thompson; Fab-lie, Mr W. J. Ormandy; C-re.ymouth, Mr F, 11. Kilgour; Teniuka, Mr G. W. Armitage; Waimate, Mr S. I. Fitch.
