ROADS AND RAILWAYS
"MUST BE LINKED UP. 1 "
(PBESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.)
WELLINGTON, August 10
The Prime Minister (Hon. J. G. Coates) paid a flying visit to Eketahuna on Saturday and opened the Makakahi bridge. He was enthusiastically received by the local authorities, and was entertained at a largelyattended luncheon.
Accompauyme him were Mrs Coates and Mr h\ J. Jones (chairman of the Railway Board). The Mayor of Eketahuna welcomed Mr Coates as Mr Massey's successor,, and expressed the opinion that he was the man for the position.'
Mr Coates said tie Government was glad to see works being: done which would assist the primary producer. The Government's contribution to the bridge might be considered small, but it was big enough to enable the borough to have the work carried out. As the finances became stronger, it was possible that in future the Highways Board would be ablo to extend its assistance to many roads in the boroughs that wore part of the main highways. The road which the bridge linked up was not a highway, but it was an important feeder road for the railways. The Government and the Highways Board were considering very closely the question of road service and construction. He recognised that if the railways were going to get the business the roads and railways mrast be linked up, so that the best possible service could be given to the community: The departments were out to do that and to. give to the people a railway service that would beftbmo indispensable.
