GENERAL NEWS. At the Magistrate's Court on Saturday, before Mr R. Clark, J.P., Robert Henry Hampton, was fined £1 on a charge of drunkenness. A collision occurred at the intersection of Tancred and East streets between cars driven by Mr A. Cates, of Asli'burton, and a Mr Watson, of Christeliureii, on Friday evening. Mr Gates's car had the front whefls.and axle torn from under it. Mr Nation's car was not badlv damaged. . At the Ist Canterbury Mounted Rifles Band concert last evening there waS A large attendance. Under tlie baton of Lieutenant W. li. Osborne the following programme tvas given: March, "Ravenswood"; selection, "A Drum-head Service"; hymn, "Elsie" (Sfubbs); tripletongue cornet duet, "Jolly Boys," Messrs Osborne brothers; march, The Vanished Armv"; song, "With Verdure Clad," Miss E. Claridge; song, selected, Mr G. Struthers. There was a largo attendance at a. jazz night, held , under the auspices of the Ashbiirton Quadrille Assembly, in the* Orange Hall on Saturday n'RhtDaylxj'irne's Orchestra supplied the music. The lucky spot waltts was won bv Miss M. Gougli and Mr B. Martin. The fortnightly social and t>uchre toiiraament was conducted bv the Hakatew! Lodge in the Tancred street hall on Saturday night. There was a large attendance and the winners or the euchre were Mr and Mrs E. H. i Childs. Mrs A. Mitchell's orchestra sun plied tho music for the dance which

Personal. Mr F. Kennedy, who has teen a member of the Celtic Football Club for the past three years, was made the recipient of a presentation on Saturday night. About 40 footballers gathered, including; the ■ Mayor. The presentation consisted of a of stainless cutlery, l gold watch, chain aiid an aluminium teapot and' kettle: PlunkCt Society. The monthly meeting Of the Asliburton branch of the Plunket Society "was held oh Friday, Mrs J. S. Laing presiding. Arrangements were made for Daffodil Day. It was reported that during the past month the visits to the' town office totalled 018 and visits paid to homes 89, with 24 new cases. At other county Centres the respective visits to the rooms and homes were ■as follows: —Rakaia 38 and 3,,Coldstream 10 arid 1, Hinds'l3 and 1, Mayfield 18 and 4, Mount SomerS 8 and 4, Methven 9 and 2. There had been three new cases in the county. It Was further reported that during the last month Mesdairies Laing, Hunter, and Blrnie arid Miss Coward had Visited Rakaia and the Sixth sub-branch had been formed. ' '"

Gull Club. Members of the jietoly-formed Ashburton Gun Club competed in three matches on the racecourse on Saturday. In spitd of the bittefly eold and stormy weather, there was "an attendance of 30.
