SPORTING.

Acceptances for tho second day of tho Canterbury Park Trotting Club's Winter Electing close at noon to-day. Nominations for the Napier Park Racing Club's Winter Meeting close to-day.

Tho Canterbury Park TrottingCluh's Winter Meeting will bo concluded tomorrow, and as there is every prospect of an improvement in tho track conditions tho racing should bo of a very interesting character. There is the promise of good fields, and a race that■will arouse more than ordinary interest will bo tho Maturity Handicap, which will bring together some of tho promising three-year-olds of tho season. Hie first raco ■will start at 11.15 a.m. Tho Ashburton Trotting Club's Winter Meeting, to be held on Friday and Saturday, June 12th and 13th, promises to 1)6 very successful. The fields engaged are good, and with two such attractions as tho Sapling Stakes on the first day and the Free-for-All on tho second day the meeting should mako a strong appeal to lovers of trotting. Handicaps for the first day will appear on Monday and. acceptances are due on Tuesday.

Tho annual mcetine of members f-f the Amberley Racing Club will bo held on Monday, June 29th, at tho Crown Hotel, Amberley. Megan, who won tho Raukawn Cup at Otaki on Wednesday, was successful in tho same- race twelve months age. Sir Ttosebcrrv, tho winner of tho Great Northern Hurdles on Wednesday, has a very good record in .lumping races at Eliorslie. Twelve months ago at tho Auckland Racing Club's Winter Meeting, ho started three times ln steeplechase events, winning tho Creenlano Steeplechase and Great; Northern Steeplechase, and being second in the Winter Steeplechase, being beaten a length in tho last mentioned race by Marv Bruce, to whom he was conceding 291b. Tho Waikato owner-trainer, R. Hannon. had a suocessful timo at Ellerslio on Wednesday, winning tho Penrose Hurdles with Cureaform, a five-year-old mare by Formative— Ouroama. and tho Members' Handicap with York Abbey, a four-year-old gelding by Quin Abbey, also from Curearua. Tho-same owner's Snrke, by Quin Abbey—Cison, ran .t verv good race in the Great Northern Hurdles, and after losing ground at the, fence was only beaten a length by Sir Roscberry. Income, who finished second behind Muekotoon in tho Cornwall Handicap at Ellerslio on Wednesday, occupied tbo same position behind Illumination in that race twelvo months ago. A>Press Association mossatro from Auckland says that Frisco Mail and Young Thurnham wore scratched for tho Groat Northern Steeplechase at, 11.25

a.m. yesterday. During an interval betwoon raecs at Wingatui yesterday three Tractor yearlings With the colours up wore cantered down the straight. They wore from Call-bird, Quickset and Mariannq. The, youngstor from Quickset, is a big gelding, hut was quite" as good a mover as tho other two.

When Bonnie Winkie was produced for tho Provincial Handicap at tho Dunedin Meeting yesterday ho looked big and muscular. He rijn a really good raco, and it is not unlikely that G. ridding will shortly have him somothing liko the Bonnie Winkio , of a couple of seasons ago.

Loughrea was an improved horse yosterday as the result of his race on the previous day, and by winning the Provincial Handicap at Wingatui registered n win long overdue. In fact it was his first for the season, and now that ho lias broken tho spoil ho should, go on winning. .''■■■■

Bonona again ran a peculiar race at Wingatui. Qn the first day he was last half a mile from home, and then showed a surprising burst of speed. In the Provincial Handicap yesterday he was allowed to drift back from a nice position with about half the journey gone, only to oomo again with a rattle when too late. He apparently stays well' and will win a good racobeforo the soason closes.

- In making Frenchman favourite for the Otago Hurdles yesterday tho public . was keeping in mind the successful association between the horse and his rider A. McMullan, the rocord being up till yesterday seven Tides for six wins. The Danube .gelding, though beaten, put up .a good showing and will be on hand for some of the remaining ' big cross-country ovonts. He is a great jumper and his ability was the cause of Captain Sarto's fall in the big race yesterday. • The latter tried to take off with Frenchman at the fonco at the top of straight and crashed badly. His ridei 1 , P.. Keene, received- a nasty shaking and was removed to hospital. Bonomel attempted to run off at the first fence in the Otago Hurdles, and it transpires that his rider, W. Scobio, . had become entangled in the tapes and in attempting to free himsolf had to' hold his mount together with only one hand. Fortunately Bonomel got over tho fence though wido out, with tho happy result that ho won for the third time in his three. starts in iMr H. Danipier-Crossley's colours. Bonomoj will not race on' Saturday. R. Emerson is sending Moorland and Solforito homo from Dunedin to-day. S.olforito, who has only won four hack • races in two seasons, was asked in the Janofiold Handicap to give more than a stone to Blue Dragoon, who has won as many races in the past few months and was handicapped at only 31b above tho minimum. It was little wondor that Blue Dragoon was made favourite for the race, but his supporters had a poor run for their money, tho Soldiors' Chorus gelding being placed badly in tho early part. He did well to finish close up . behind the placed horses, and he may be amongst the winners shortly. Irish, tho winner of the Janefield Handicap at Wingatui yesterday, registered a very easy win. Ho was handicapped on the minimum, but is equal to carrying a good bit more weight and is likely to stay a journey later on. He ,is a half-brother by . Solferino. to Boughleeh Dhoun, being from the imported mare Sprig of Erin, by Desmond —Sweet Vernal, by Sainfoin—Musa by Martian's sire Martagon. *

J. Malone, owner of Aurore, was reported by a club attendant for having given the Birkenhead gelding a drink before the Wingatui Steeplechase yesterday. Malone was brought before the stewards and- the bottle used was produced. Malono said that it contained glycerine, but on examination it was found also to have contained eucalyptus. The bottle is be sent to tho Govern* ment analyst fox examination^ The following rahandicaps have been declared for the Levin Meeting:— Welter Handicap, Star Shell 8 13; Gardant 8. Makomako Handicap, Miss Hupana 8 7. Levin Handicap, Tanadees 8 12; Megan 7 7; Kuhio 7. McDonald Memorial, Lady Fingers 9 2.; Kuhio 87. Heatherlea Hack Handicap, Tempean 9 8.

Notes on the Racing.

There was only a small pool on the opening event, the Silverstream Handicap, in which Mountain Rose, Ophir, Kilris, and Coch-y-Bondhu carried most of the money. Cornflower gave a lot of trouble and was eventually stood behind the field. Olympia was. tho first, to become prominent, and when the field settled down he had charge from Coch-y-Bondhu, Bon Skirl, Salerno, Relio, and Mountain Row. Coch-y-Bondhu took charge at the end of two, furlongs and Ophir ran up into third position. Turning for tho straight Relic was lerxling from Coch-y-Bondhu, Olympia,. Ophir, and Moxmtoin Roso. Then Olympia took charge from Coch-y-Bondhu, Bon Skirl, and Ophir,. with Boughlcen BhouD coming very fast on the outside. In a very interesting' finish Bpughloen Dhoun got thero by half a length, with Coch-y-Bondhu only a neok in front of Cornflower, with Kilris, Ophir, and Salerno all close up. ■ .'■ The bracket Loughrea, and Ravenna was backed solidly for the Provincial Handicap, with Bonena "and Mountain Lion also numbering numerous admirers. The start was perfect, but in a. few strides Ravenna hit tho front, while Jubi'.ant and Prosperity dropped hade to tho rear. Going out of the straight Ravenna was showing trie way to Bonena and Dancing Bays. The latter ran into second.position behind Ravenna entering the back stroteh, and at tho six furlongs post was followed by > Bonena,' Mountain Lion, Loughrea, and Kilfane'in line, with Prosperity still last. Mountain Lion and Bonnie Winkio improved their positions at the half-mile, while Bonena dropped back. Corning round the turn Loughrea moved up. Ravenna and Bonnie Winkio led into the straight and were fighting out a good finish when Loughrea got to them and Bonena made another run. The top weight stayed on to beat his atablemate Ravenna by a nose for first, with Bonnie Winkie only a head away third and Bonena a very close fourth, Jubilant fifth, and Mountain Lion next. •

Frenchman was selected favourite for the Otago Hurdles, with good money also- coining for Bonomel, Adjutor, and Captain Sarto. From a good start Bonomel took up the running, but ho ran the first fence down and interfered with 'l'histlecrown. Captain Sarto .then tock charge from Frenchman and, Qriul Joke, and so they remained" to tho fence at the top of tho .straight, where Captain Sarto fell. Passing the stands .Frenchman, Adjutor, Bonomel, and _ Grim Joke was , the order of the leader's,' with Thistloorown tailed off. Going along the baok .Tcntorfiold ran up to a good position and Grim Joke made a faulty jump, losing a lot of ground. At the bend Tenlerfield went to the front from Frenchman, Penury Rose, and Bonomel.. The last-named led over tho la9t hurdle, and in a punishing, finish gained tho verdict by three-quartei-3 of a length. Penury Rose was another halflength awav, followed at a similnr interval by Frenchman. Then camo Tcnterfield, with Grim Joke and Thistlecrown a hundred- yard 3 away. Moorland, Sun Up, Ccmic Song, and Bugle Note, in that order, wero the only mnncrs serious'.y considered in the Wairongoa Handicap. Sun Up' quickly took charge from a good dispatch, and was close ly attended' al tho end of a furlong by Clontarf and Comic Song. Moorland ran into third place behind Sun Up and Clontarf a little further on, but was dono with at tho entrance to the straight, where Eaton Bells and Avrburn had run up in'.o handy positions." Comic Sone and Eaton Bells headed Sun Up and Clontarf at the distance, and in a stirring finish the verdict went to Comic Song by a nos?, with G uncase* who put in a lightning run in the straight, only a neck awav third, followed at a halflength's interval by Sun Up, Warhavcn, and Clontarf in line. The Wingatui Steeplechaeo was a fairly even betting race, Lady Winston being tho only runner neglected with Aiirore favourite. Cassolls showed the way over the first fence from Lady Winston and Golden Prince. Cassolls ran off nt the second fence of the double, and Golden Prince was in front at tho big. post and rails, the order of the others being lady Winston, Kipling, Whipcord, and Aurore. The last-named made a bad jump at the water jump. The ordeT was still the same passing tho stands, but the field had closed up. At the post and rails out of tho straight, Golden Prince hit hard and Auroro ran off, and Lady Winston then ■went to the front from Kipling, t Golden Prince, and Whipcord. Tho last-named made a faulty jump at the far doublo, and at the post and rails Kipling jumped to the front, the others being in close order behind him. The same order was maintained at the water jump but Whipcord had displaced Golden Prince in third position. At the last fence in the run home, Kipling held Lady Winston off to win by half a length. Whipcord .was twenty lengths away with Golden Prince and Cassells, who had be«n taken back completing the course, well back. Blue Dragoon had been very leniently handicapped for the Janefield Handicap after ( very good form in Southland, and ho was installed favourite, but at the close of betting had only and a half tickets more on him than Coch-y-Bondhu. Tout'e and AH Style were the best backed of the others. Queen Balboa gave trouble at tho barrier but pot away from a fair start with the

exception that Master Lowburn lost ground. Irish was in front at the end of a furlong-, and coming round the bend the most prominent of those behind him were. Youte, Sweet Monody, Coch-y-Bondhu, Brnnie Olive, Taboo and Queen Ba!boa. Irish held his position throughout and won by a length and a half from Coch-y-Bondhu with the fast-iinishing All Stylo ices than half a length away. Bright Mark was fourth, Sweet Melody fifth, and the favourite sixth

The four acceptors went out. to contest ihi Forbury Steeplechase, and the betting' order was Miighcra, Tokomairiro, Windermere, and Lucky Chance. The o.uartet jaced to the, first fence together, but once over Lucky Chance was in front. After passing the water jump, Windermere piloted the field, the order parsing the stands being Windermere, Lucky Chance, Maghera, and Tokomairiro. Magheia ran up to Windermere after crossing the sod wa.l and jumped to the front sit the next fence. From then on i', was a duel between the favourite and Windermere. The latter led over the bet fence, but Maghera came again and won by two lengths. Tokomairiro was over a hundrrd yards away with Lucky Chance a long wav back. Gay Juliet and Happy Days monopolised the betting in the. Invcrmay Waiter, none o: the others having a chance, avecrdine to the machine. Franca i«e again gave _ trouble at the barrier but got awav with her field, or which Gay .Juliet and Fu mar were the i first to break th" line wi(h So!way. Avispado, | and Kilbarry' clcse up. Gav_ Juliet was cased at the end of a furlong, Kilbarry, Solway and Fulmar in line carrying on the running l-> the haif-mi'e post. Gav Juliet commenced t- mcv ur> a<min at the turn for home, whe-e Bcautv Li<rhl put in an •appearance. In a «ood finish, Guy Juliet 'went on It bent Solway b" a l ength with Marmont fini°h:n? test on the rails, a neck p»-av third. B»"i'tv Lisrlit. Happy Bays and Kilbarry headed the remainder.
