TRAMWAY BOARD.

TO THK EDITOB OV "THC FUSS." Sir, —Mr Wright Buys (and purports to have tramway authority for so stating) that each stop costs Id. Tho Board's chairman says the cost of wear-and-tear and power is 3d per mile, and socks to throw ridicule on Mr Wright by suggesting that to eliminate three stops in a milo would thus reduce running charges to vanishing point. Does the Board's chairman oxpoct tho averago reader to forget that while, in some "miles" of track there may bo six or eight stopping places, there are, on the other hand, lengths of track where Btopping places are largely absent, and, again, all stops are not used on every trip, and on "express" runs, indeed, very few stops are made. As an instance, take Sumner line. Allowing for "express" trips and the fact that on many of tho slack trips few stops are made, I calculate that on this eight-mile run there are, on an average, 24 stops per trip, day in and day out. On the chairman 'a figuro (3d per mile) this works.out to Id per stop, just aa Mr Wrigh't stated. I admit I may bo slightly wrong in my estimate of an average of 24 stops per Sumner eightmile trip, but I believe it iB near enough to show that Mr Wright's statement is substantially corroct, and that tho chairman's attempt to discredit and ridicule it is poor policy to adopt towards your readers., For my own part, I still claim that there is room for a saving of thousands of pounds por annum in overhead and operating expenses, and that some sources of revenue are as yet untouched. What is wanted is more "imagination" on the part of the Board and the management, increasing fares is not the best way to meet the situation.—Yours, 6 C '' BUSINESS MAIL June 3rd, 1925. TRAMWAY GUIDE. TO THE XDITOa OF "TBI KIMS." 6ir,—There were alterations made in the railway time-tables on May sth. The Tramway Guide of June Ist ignores these. The best thing one can say about the tramways is that the employees are uniformly courteous and obliging. If the lines don't .pay, perhaps the inefficiency referred to above indicates where the fault lies.—Yours etc, v visrrofi. June 4th, 1925.
