GENERAL NEWS. Although there arc no defended civil cases set down for hearing the Magistrate's Court to-day there is a fair amount of police busines's, which contains charges against well known local anglers of selling salmon without a ' license. A first offender for drunkenness was fined £l, the amount of his bail at tin Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, before Mr J. B. Christian, J.P. The Weather. Much brighter weather was experienced in Ashburton yesterday, and ten degrees of frost were registered. After 9 a.m. on "Wednesday seven points of rain were registered at the Domain weather station. Presbyterian Church. The Tiuwald Tresbyterian Church held its annual social on Wednesday night, when the Rev. W. Marshall presided over a, good attendance. An address was given by the Rev. W. J. Euticott, and items were contributed as follows: —Violin solo, Mr Norrish; recitations, Miss- McMillan, Messrs Ford and*. Silcoek; Scotch reading, Mr Craighead; solos, Misses Dixon and Marshall, Mesdame's Marsden and Raffey, Messrs Craighead, McMillan, and 1 Norrish. Tho accompaniments were j played by Misses Gates, Hogg, and Nori rish. A vote of thanks was passed I to all those who had assisted with the concert. Golf. There was a good attendance) on'the Ashburton golf links yesterday, when a ladies' flag match was contested under good weather conditions. The winners were Miss E. Stewart and Mrs V. P. Boot. " METHVEN. The first of the serios of progressive euchre tournaments promoted by tho combined Methven Ladies' Hockey Club and the Methven Cycling Club was held in tho Town Hall on Wednesday. There was a Jarge attendance and between ninety and ono hundred players. took part in the tournament. The prizes were a very handsome clock for the ladies and a brief bag for the gentlemen, and they were given by supporters of the clubs, who prefer to remain anonymous. The ladies', prize was won by Mrs A. Grieves after a play-off. with Mis R. Goodwin, while Mr W.J. Owenwon the men's after playing off with! Mr G. Hansen. Consolation prizes were awarded to Miss Belle Crooks and Mr H. E. Thompson. Mr D. C. Wright, httndad over,the prizes to the winners, arid in doing so thanked those present for the support they had given tho two clubs. After a daintv supper had

been enjoyed, the hall was cleared for dancing, and in this over fifty coupler participated. Music for the. dance was supplied by Messrs Len Allred (piano) and Len Gray Extras were played by Mrs Alex. Lawrence and Miss Manger. Mr D. Anderson was M.C., while Messrs I). C. Wright; and F. A. Anderson were joint secretaries. From a financial point of view the function was successful, and both clubs will benefit considerably. A close holiday was observed at Methven on the King's Birthday. Flags were flown from the Post Office, bank, and public buildings. The weather war. decidedly boisterous, but in spite of this there was a- good muster nf Boy Scouts at a parade at 0 a.m. Scoutmaster Tooley gave the boys .1 short address, and after saluting the flag, the troop was dismissed. A hare drive, was to have been held in connexion j with the Methven Gun Club, but owing to the inclement weather, this was postponed until a. future date. Instead those who turned up for the drive adjourned to the racecourse, where scv-» eral clay bird matehps were fired.

The uionthlv meeting of the McthTen Domain Board, to have been held on Tuesday evening, lapsed for want of a quorum. Only two members put in an appearance. Messrs Jas. Carr, chairman of directors of the Mt. Hutt Co.-op. Dairy Company, and Mr Jas. Cook, manager, arcs at present in Dunedin in connexion with tho annual meeting of the South Island Dairy Association. Mr 6. G. Holmes, "Mt, Harding,'' Methven, is spending a holiday at Botorua.

The members of the Methven Association Football Club gavo a Farewell smoke concert to Mr J. Wa'ldie, one of their members, who is leaving the district. During tho evening a- short toast list was gone through, including "The King." "The Guest" by Mr F. Anderson), "Kindred Sports" (proposed by Mr N. Mcintosh and replied to by Mr D. C. Wright) and "Methven Association Football Club" (proposed by Mr J. A. Stephens). Songs were contributed by Messrs D. C. Wright, H. Clark, T. Sim, H. Bayliss, J. Temple, L. Allred, and a pianoforte solo-by Mr L. Allred, who also acted as acoompanist. Mr J. Temple, in the absence of the president, Mr Jas. Carr, presented Mr Waldie with a pocket wallet and tobacco- pouch, and also a. small cheque for Mrs Waldie, as a small token of the esteem in which lie was held by the members, and as an appro*ciation of his efforts on -behalf of the club. Several other (members filso spoke in eulogistic terms of their guest. Mr Waldie suitably replied. The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Methven Lodge was held on Wednesday evening. Bro. H. Noble, N;G.. presided over a good attendance of members. One new member was proposed. Arrangements for the Past Grands' night- were discussed, and left in the hands of the secretary. PENDARVES. On Friday evening the Hall Committee . held a progressive euehrc tournament. There was an attendance of about eighty, including visitors .from Dromore and SeaSeld. The chairman (Mr J. W. Watson) moved a vote of thanks to ,Mr Jas. Lambia. for his generosity in. giving the six pjrizes for the winners that evening. The motion was carried.', Mr A. P. Bruce controlled the ..games. Tho ladies' first prize was won by Miss Daisy Watson with 12(3 points, Miss. Rena Watson gaining second prize with 114 points, and Miss Ailsa- Raulsin third prize with 112 points. The gentlemen's- prizes were won- by Mr L. Scott,. 12.1 points, I; Mr' R. Bayncs, 118 points, 2; Mr D. Shelley,; 117 points, S. After supper a .dance was held, the music being contributed, by. Misses Esther King, Ethel Maleblmj Alma Watson, Ida Bruce, and Mr Eric Rankin. .
