JUSTICES OF THE PEACE.

ANNUAL DINNER AND SOCIAL. The seventh annual dinner and social ot the Canterbury Justices o£ the Peace Association, celebrating the King's Birthday, was held in the Rendezvous last evening. There was an attendance of nearly 200, including members and their ■wives. Mr C. 11. Gilby, vice-president of the Association. waß in the chair, and with him at the head table wero Mrs Gilbv, the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs j. K. Archer), the Hon. D. Buddo, Mr Wyvern /Wilson, S.M., and Holland, vice-patrons of the Association, and Mr \Y. J. Hunter, president of the Canterbury Law Society, and Mr S. McCarthy, honorary solicitor of the Association. t The chairman said ho had received a large number of apologies for absence, but ho wished to mention the names of Mr Justice Adams, Mr 11. V. Widdowpon, S.M., Mr L. M. Isitt, M.P., and tho Hon. G. W. I'ussell.

Mr C. E. Jones gavo a spirited address on "Empire." He dwelt at some length on many words which each letter in the word "empiro" stood for. His remarks were followed with much interest, and he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks, accompanied with applause. Musical and elocutionary items were given by the following:—Songs, Miss Dorothy Spiller, Mr P. C. Penfold, Mrs A. W. MacUillivray, Mr H. Blakeley, Mr E. J. Johnston; violin solo, Mr Bornard Barker; duet, Messrs Blakeley and Johnston; recitations, Sir Morgan Da vies; quartets, tho Lyric Four (Messrs H. Blakeley, S. Morgan, K. More, and E. J. Johnston).
