—.—— BURNED TO DEATH. William Clay, about 80 years of age, an old-age pensioner, was burnt to death at 6 a.m. yesterday at Glentui. Deceased had been employed on the O'Halloran Estate for many years, but, being past work, ho was allowed to live in a five-roomed house on the estate. On Tuesday he visited the homestead about 4 p.m.,'and was given tea. Later a friend, Harry Tomlinson, called and found him well. ■ . At 6 a.m. yesterday a neighbouring family saw that the house was on fire, and practically destroyed. Clay ; could not be seen anywhere. Constable Bobertson, of Oxford, was informed, and he searched the ruina of tho lire, and found part of tho trunk of a man's body. Suffering from the effects of gas poisoning, an elderly married wotaan,' Mrs Eliza Thorpe, residing in a lodginghouso at Mount Eden, was admitted to Hospital to-day, and died shortly afterwards. PALMERSTON N., June 3. A fatal accident occurred at the railway vnrdß at 12.50 a.m., in which a shunter, named Dennis Murphy, aged about thirty, lost his life. Murpny nad piloted an' engine out of the sheds, coupled it on to a train and was proceeding to board a passenger car returning to the sheds, when ho Avas struck by a mbvihg line of sheep trucks. He was frightfully injured, his left arm and left leg being nearly severed. His right arm was broken and he was crushed about tho centre of the body. Medical assistance was summoned, but Murphy died, without regaining consciousness. within less than half an hour. Murphy, who was a native of Dunedin, was a married man with one child.
