A BLOW-OUT.
OIL WELL EXPLOSION. HEAVY MATERIAL THROWN A DISTANCE. (?&X63 ASSOCIATION NEW PLYMOUTH, Juno 3. A big blow-out of gas, heralded by a terrific roar, occurred at the oil bore at Moturoa to-night, damaging the boring plant and hurling mud, stones, and parts of the derrick in all directions. The bore is one of two put down by Taranaki Oilfields, Ltd., and is 14S8ft down. A dense black cloud wrapped the derrick, and through it were huried sheets of iron and timber. Big showers ol' stones were thrown long distances, some tailing on the wharves aud in the harbour. The mud which was thrown up tilled tho atmosphere with a strong odour like that of kerosene. The derrick was not badly damaged, but au attached shed was completely blown out. One large stone penetrated the roof of a tearooms nearby. The men on duty at tho bore were not, injured. It must be remembered that similar blow-outs have occurred at a bore put down in the past, and are now to be expected, so to-night's incident should not be unduly magnified.
