MINING MATTERS.

GBEYMOUTH, April 29.

In the new Morgan seam at the State mines a trial was commenced to-day with a coal-cutting machine driven by compressed air, which will bo used for holing. The seam named is stated to be likely to be developed into one of the largest mines in New Zealand.

A number of Italian miners from the United States have commenced work at Eewanui. Their knowledge of English is very limited. Public Service Appeal Board. . A sitting of the Public Service Appeal Board was held at Grcymouth to-day, Mr P. B3rr presiding. About 20 cases from the principal West Coast towns will be dealt, with. Mr A. C. Tnrnbull, secretary to the Public Service Commissioner, represented the Department at the sittings and Mr P. W. Miller, secretary of the Public Service Association, watched proceedings on behalf of appellants. Personal. Mr S. J. Collett, chief clerk of the Tourist Department, visited Punakaiki to-day in company with Mr F. J. Spora, local agent. He was impressed with the possibilities of Maruia Springs, which he visited en route from Takaka, and anticipated a large increase in the number of tourists who will include the district in their itinerary. At Beefton last evening Mr Collett met the executive of the Progress League, and discussed ways and means of advertising the attractions of the district.

Mr D. Burns, of the Greymouth Telephone Exchange, has been promoted to the accountant's branch, Wellington. Mr L. O'Neill, clerk in the Post Office Savings Bank, Greymouth, has received notice of transfer to Dunedin. He has been prominent in boxing and League football, playing for the Marist Club. Mr W. Blackmuir, of Stafford, has taken over the Criterion Hotel, which is to be rebuilt.

Mr T. Shaw, of Eeefton, has left for Christchureh, where he has received an appointment. The death is reported of Mrs John Thompson, of the Maruia district, at the age of 73 years.

The funeral of the late Mr John McLeod, which was held this afternoon at Karoro Cemetery, was attended by a number of State miners. The Kev. Father McMonaglo celebrated Requiem Mass and conducted the service at the graveside.

School Committees. At the annual meeting of householders at Eunanga, the following committee was declared elected without the necessity of an election: Messrs E. Armstrong, D. Barnes, J. Davidson, J. Dnggan, H. Gillingham, Johnston W. Bafferty, E. Southward, and W. J. Wicks. Mr Wicks was elected chairman, Mr. Duggan secretary-treasurer, and Messrs Armstrong and Wicks were elected trustee's.

At Otira the following committee was elected: —Messrs Abrahams, Allott, Brown, Eothwell, and Young. At Kumara: Messrs E. Burrell, H. Haines, J. Eeedy, D'. McLean, and T. Walker. The first-named was elected chairman, and Mr Haines secretary.

Railway Matters. It is reported that the Eailway Department will shortly make alterations in the time-table now in operation on the Westland section.
