COLDSTREAM ROAD BOARD.

Six nominations have been received for five seats on the Coldstream Boad Board, necessitating a poll, which will be taken on May 7th. The following are the nominees:—Messrs John Brown, James Campbell, William John Bell, Charles Gilliand, William McKcage and Henrv Wills. " v. St Stephen's Men's Club.

At Tuesday evening's meeting of the St. Stephen's Men's Club there was a good attendance, and the president, Mr G. V. Furby, presided. It was resolved to write to the St Andrew's Literary and Debating Society offering congratulations upon its formation and to invite the Catholic Club to a card match on May 19th. "Is more learnt from experience than from reading?" was the subject chosen for the next debate, for which Messrs H. Tasker and E. E. Loach were appointed the leaders. The remainder of the evening was taken up with impromptu speeches. Rugby FootbalL The following have been selected to represent Celtic on Saturday:—Seniors v. Ashburton at Show Grounds: I. Golf. Ideal weather, with brilliant sunshine favoured, the official opening of the Ashburton golf season, which took place yesterday afternoon in the presence of a very large attendance of members and visitors.

The president, Mr H. C. Orb ell, declared the season open. It had been intended to open the season at an early date, but the weather conditions had been against them. The past season had been most prosperous, and there was every promise that the present season would be equally prosperous. The club now had a membership of 160. He warmly congratulated the club on., its present position and its prospeets for the future.

Members engaged in the playing of a mixed foursome of nine holes for trophies given respectively by Mr and Mrs Derisley Wood, of Christchnrch. Mr Wood's prize was annexed by E. P. V. Sealey, while that given by Mrs Wood went to Miss I. Digby The following is tho draw for the first monthly medal (ladies) to be played to-day:—Mrs H. Seldon and Miss Digby; Mrs Pinfold and Miss Keith; Mrs Fisher and Miss Bonnington; Mrs Kennedy and Mrs Smith; Miss Stewart and Miss Boddington; Mrs F. Seldon and Miss Dunlop; Mrs Boot and Mrs E. Tucker.

Euapuna. Nearly one hundred people gathered on Anzac Day at the Euapuna Memorial Gates, to show their gratitude to the honoured dead. A large number of wreaths was placed on the gates before the service commenced at 11 a.m., conducted by the Eevs. Paul Beresford, A. D. Kirkland and J. Belshaw, the lastnamed reading two lessons from the Bible, after which the Eev. A. D. Kirkland delivered a stirring address. All of the 75 poppies allotted to the district were sold and many more might have been disposed of had they been available. The proceeds from the sale of poppies amounted to approximately £5. Qwing to the comparative lack of adVertisemeht this year there was but a small attendance" at the annuaf Householders ' meeting of the Euapuna School. The balance-sheet showed a good credit balance. Tho following were elected to the committee: Messrs E. McLay, S. Harvey, G. Eoss, E. Lane, T3L Moore.

MOUNT SOMERS. Mrs Bell, an English sportswoman., returned from the back-country ranges without having any luck except sighting a few deer. Sirs Bell has secured 400 deer altogether, 40 of them last season in Scotland, hut they were nob to he compared with the New Zealand heads. It is to he regretted that she did not secure a single specimen of the chase. •. . The Commissioner of Crown .bands and two members of the Land Board paid a trisit- to Mount Somers on Tuesday. • ' "•

METHVEN. The Methven Association Football Club's senior team have arranged to play a match with the Ashburton "Wanderers' team on Saturday next at Ashburton. The local team are putting in a lot of practice and are confident of success. . Tbe team will be chosen from among those attending practice tomorrow. The Methven Club's junior team will play the Wakanui team, also at Ashburton. A special meeting of the committee of the Methven Public Library was held on Tuesday evening. Dr. W. H. D. MoKee presided, and there were also present Messrs J. Temple, H. Pawson, R. Allen and W. J. Owen and Mesdames H. Pawson, W. Shemeld, and Bonnington. It was decided to compile a new catalogue of the books, and Dr. McKee promised to commence this work without delay. "Work in connexion with tie high pressure water supply scheme for Methven is nearing completion, and it is now only a question of days when all residents will have the benefit of a plentiful supply of water. The work of. piping the main water race through the township haabeen commenced and a large gang, is busy putting in the pipes. When completed this will be a big improvement to the township.

TE PIRITA. The residents of Te Pirita hare arranged to hold a series of euchre tournaments during the winter months in aid of tihe school'-funds. The opening tournament was held in the school on Tuesday evening. There was a good attendance and an enjoyable evening was soent. The ladies' prize was won by Mrs N. Barber and.the gentlemen's prize by Mr D. Inch. Consolation prizes were presented to Miss Wilson and Mr F. Breading. RAKAIA. Captain Stein of the Salvation Army, who has been in charge of the Rakaia district, has been transferred to Hokitika.
