LYTTELTON NEWS.
Harbour improvements,
The Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday accepted the tender of Babcoik and Wilcox, an English firm, for the supply of four three-toa electric • cranes for Ho. 7 wharf. Tho price tendered was £19,702, and the total estimated cost is £29,626. The cranes are to bo of the portal type, to lift 3 tons at 150 ft per minute or one ion at 300 ft per minute. They- will each ha,ve a maximum radius of 50ft, and have what in known as level-luffing gear,,.similar to a crane at the Otago Dock, Port Chalmers. The advantages of the dcsigil selected are that the luffing rope ijjerely lies .in the grooved rim of the curved arm jof, the luffing lever, instead of passing b'.CKwarda and forwards over a number of sheared as _in all the other designs. Similarly the hoisting rope passes directly to the hoisting barrel over the shelve at the jib head, instead of backwards and forwards ov«r. a number of Bheaves as in other designs. Wear and tear on roceß and sheaves are thus reduced to a minipaum.
