RECOMMISSIONED.

BARQUENTINE YSABEL.

(special to "the pbsss.") AUCKLAND, April 1

The ba-rquentino Ysabel, which was built in Auckland iifty-onc years ago, and who£>. history constitutes a chapter in the story of tho development of Auckland as a shipping port, is to enter on yet another stage of her long career. She has been' sold to Messrs Can - , Pountney and Co. on account of an island firm, which intends to employ her. in the inter-islaaft trade in the Eastern Pacific.

Originally named Southern Cross the Ysabel was built in 1874 by Messrs Nicoll.and Son. She was the third vessel of the Melanesian Mission, and tho second one to be named Southern Cross,' After 19 years' service in mission work, the barquentine became too small for the purpose, and was sold to Captain Boas.. He took otit the auxiliary engines and renamed her the Ysabel. For the ensuing 23 years, with Captain Ross as master, the Ysabel traded between Auckland and the -islands. In 1914 Captain Loss sold her to Messrs G-. H. Scales and Co., of .'Wellington. The dearth of shipping during the war resulted in, craft of all. sizes find nigs being brought into ~use for overseas work, and the Ysabol carried a cargo of New Zealand produce to San Francisco, returning with caße oil. Later she waa engaged in the Niue Island trade, until'superseded by the steamer. Since then she has .been lying idle at her moorings in - the harbour. In Bpite of her age, the Ysabel. is fit for mapy years.' -work yet, judging from the opinion of experts who recently inspected Ivcr on the slip. They marvelled at the remarkably well preserved oondition of the hull" especially below the water line. She is a'fine example of a class of sailing vessel built in the past.
