WAIMAKARIRI GLACIAL REGION.
, . - ■ . -4 . PROPOSED EXPEDITION. MR A. P. HARPER OFFERS ASSISTANCE. Mr A. P. Harper, who is well known in Canterbury for his efforts'in popularising the Alpine attractions of the South .Island, has written to the. organiser for the Canterbury Progress League offering any assistance in his power in connexion with, the League's endeavour to secure better access .to the Waimakariri glacial region. Mr Harper lias had some experience of the region, as, just prior to the outbreak of the Great "War, he spent several dayS at the head waters of the Waimakariri and wrote a report on the region for the Tourist Department the same year. For some considerable time Mr Harper has been advocating the opening tip of the region,, find in his letter he expresses, the opinion that a comparatively small expendituretwo or three hundred pounds—would be sufficient to make it accessible for visitors who do not mind roughing it a bit. As to the attractions of the region, Mr Harper states that tie icefails and the scenery are quite good. Mr Cliniio has written thanking Mr Harper for his offer of assistance, and lifts suggested that he should 'tecufs with Mr H. F. von Haast, of Wellington, details in connexion with. the expedition from Christehut'oli which it is proposed should "investigate the region and ascertain what is required to make it accessible to" campers end Alpinists. These gentlemen, it is suggested, may be able to fix upon a d-ate that will 6uit them, and in that eventuality tho Progress League will endeavour to make the date agressd upon suit the convenience of the Christchurch people, -who svre anxious- to form part of the expedition. Upon receipt, of definite information as to the date of the expedition, a, meeting of those interested will be called to discuss details and arrangements.
