OBITUARY.
\n; A. E. TAIWE. Mr A. E. Lowe, head gardener fo Sir Rhodes, died at Otahuna yesterday morning. Tito deceased gentleman, who ii as horn in London 73 years ago, was regarded as Nw Zealand s leading authority on the hybridisation of narcissi. To him belonged the honour ol producing several new species of daffodils, among them being Heart' ol Gold. Silvarplano, Arikitoa, ar Cloud, Marshal Forh, Mararoa, Carmelite, Anzae and Tied Trumpeter. As a boy he was greatlv interested in Kew Gardens, London, where be spent mneh of his sparo time. Coming as a yonng man to New Zealand, he was engaged as a gardener by Mr Art-bur Perry, of Tim aru, and when Sir Re a ten TJhodeP laid out Otahuna. he engaged Mr Lowe to take chargo of the work, the rosnlt being the most beautiful gardens of their kind in the Dominion, covering as thev do an area of 50 acres planted in daffodils and various shrub*. Mr Lowe, who had written a lot on horticulture, leases a widow and a grown-up family.
The death took plane at the IXanruv virke Hospital of Wirilia.ua Karaitiana, the last of tho great chiefs of the Rangitane tribe, of Manawat u, whoso swav extended as far north as Kopua> Whakango was the grandmother of Wirihana Karaitiana, and her sons succeeded the old chief. To her grandson, Wirihana Kaimokonuna, the father of deceased, the chiefs of tho Eangitane tribe erected a fine monument in tho Tahoraite cemetery. Wirihana Karaitiana, who was a largo landholder in tho district, leaves a daughter. Sirs Wi Karauria, and a son, Hautu, alao a number of grandchildren. A very old Southlander, Mr Robert Riddell, passed away at Orepuki last week at the advanced ace of 87 years. With his wife he arrived in New Zealand in ISG2 by the Flying Mist, which was wrecked near the entrance to Bluff Harbour. Deceased, who was a carpenter and wheelwright by trade, built the first house in Gore. "Later he engaged in mining and farming at Orcpuki, but resumed his trade. In his younger days'Mr Riddell was a noted athlete and wrestler. He is survived by four sons and four daughters, 51 grandchildren andl 21 great-grand-childrtem.
