FERRY SERVICE.

FAST DAYLIGHT TRIPS. WAHINE BREAKS RECORD. The ferry steamer Wahine arrived at Lvttcltoii yesterday morning from Wellington with 900 passengers. Last evening the Maori arrived with 650, the total arrivals for the day being 1550. The Wahine sailed again for Wellington at 9.30 a.m., taking about 550, while the Maori sailed last night with 750. The Wahine arrives this morning from Wellington, and is to sail about 0 a.m. on a daylight trip to Wellington. The Maori is due about 4.30 p.m. from Wellington, and sails in the evening on the return trip. In her' daylight trip from Lyttclton to Wellington yesterday the Wahine, "which already holds the record for the trip, succeeded in lowering her own record by five minutes. She accomplished the distance from the wharf at Lyttelton to the wharf at Wellington in S-J hours, at an average speed of 21 knots. Her previous record was made on August 26th, 1913, when she arrived at Wellington after doing the distance from Heads to Heads in 7 hours 5S minutes, an average speed of 20.12 knots, and taking 8 hours 50 minutes from wharf to wharf. The Wahine has only recently returned from Port Chalmers after being converted to an oil-burner. Her conversion has undoubtedly increased her speed, as .in recent years she has never approached the Bpeed attained yesterday. The Maori, on her run from Wellington yesterday, also put up a fine performance. She had a fresh southerly wind against her all the way. She left Wellington at 8.20 a.m., and arrived at Lyttelton at 6.10 p.m., taking 9 hours 50 minutes- from wharf to wharf. Under the circumstances this was even a, better performance than the Wahine's.
