RACE FOR A DOCTOR.
PASSENGERS IN THE STOKE- ' HOLD. About eight, hours after the small steamer E:ma left Wellington recently. one of the passengers, Mr J. Dis, became seriously iIL Bemedial measures were applied, but his conditiou became worso rapid];-. The master of the vessel, Captain Carter, decided to make for the Chatham Islands and put in at Waitangi. The steamer's usual speed is nine knots, but extra stokers were put on, and managed to get her up to fourteen knots. Some of the passengers, also, lent a hand in the stokehold. The vessel arrived off Waitangi forty-eight hours after leaving Wellington, and immediately Mr Dix was attended by Dr. Ellison, who stated that, had the vessel been a few hours later, the patient would not have lived. Mr Dix is now on the road to recovery.
