PARKS AND RESERVES.

MANY IMPROVEMENTS. Work i 3 progressing steadily to improve still further the city parks and reserves. The following report was presented to the City Council by the Reserves Committee last night:— '

.Linwood Park.—A hedge has been planted with Craetagus Cremilaita at the main entrance. The roses, and flower borders have had the necessary attention. The Superintendent recommended that the largo - ovaj should be ploughed up and worked - during the summer months and sown down in the autumn. The turf covering this area is in very bad prder as a result of recent floodings. The Superintendent's recommendation was adopted by the committee and is referred • to. the Council for approval.

Linwood Nursery.—A start has been made to line out young conifers and other* forest trees.

Opawa Park.—This park has L"een rolled with a'heavy roller and the walks cleaned. St. Albans Park.—The flower ; borders have been put in order, and the new area rolled. Other general work is well forward. Woolston Park.—A portion of this park has been ploughed and cultivated, and it is hoped to have it sown in grass at an early date. All general work is well forElmwood Park.—A commencement been made to erect the iron post and chain fence on the Heaton street frontage.. All borders and walks are now in good order. Spreydon park is looking very well, the grass has been cut for the first time, and the area rolled' with a heavy Sydenham Park.—lt has been decided to provide an entrance in the eouth-west corner of this, park, which will give access from Johnson street. This work is being carried out as an experiment, the.opinion having been expressed that a gflte placed in such a position'would cause tracks to be worn 'in the turf, and' should such develop the committee, will forthwith have the gate City Reserves.—Many of the dead, willows have been removed, and aTe replaced with young trees. Flower beds .in. Victoria square have' been . planted with rhododendrons, azaleas, lilacs, etc. . Beckenham Park.—lt is hoped to, make a start within the next few days to improve the paths in this park, and a certain- amount of plantipg will be undertaken. - Smart's Pond.—The -ipond hna been cleared, and all debris and the: old tree -stumps are ready for removal; .-.•--..■■ '• •. Sole Use of Parks.—The sole usw of St. Albans'. Park has' been granted to Hhe Children's Playground Committee for . November 22nd ' from noon, for the : purpose. of holding' a fete in furtherance, 0f..;. their efforts to. raise funds for the -purpose_of equipping the children's playground..'. The Woolston Band has been' given- similar permission in respect - of-'Woolston Park for November 29th, when they propose holding a fete in aid °i the'fund which is being raised to enable the band to defend the New' Zealand championship at Auckland- in /February '-next. _..- ; .
