SELWYN PLANTATIONS.

MEETING OF BOARD. A meeting of the Sclwyn Plantations Board was held yesterday morning. Present--Mossrs G. H. Bullard, Commissioner of Crown Lands (chairman), W\ T. Popple, Godfrey Hall, E. M. Morten, b. A Staples, George Scott, C. Woolf, J. A. Adams, G. Witty, M.P., and E. 3aim A special report was presented by Mr llobinson, on tho grub which is attacking matured pinus insignis trees in tho Kuapana district. A specimen of the grub was submitted with the report, and it appeared t° be identical with the grub which attacks white pine and-matti trees in tho Now Zealandi bush. Entomologists to whom' the grub had been submitted were of tho opinon that the irrub was a New Zealand natiyo, and that tho habit of attacking Pinus insignis trees was unknown. Tho Commonwealth Entomologist is making arrangements to hatch specimens sent to him. Iti ,a montlxlv report the superintendent stated that the intensely dry weather is plainlv noticeable in all recently-established plantations, and the limit of endurance of even hardier trees planted is being reached. At Darfield for the past three months tho total rainfall amounted to only 1.73 inches. Tho extreme dryness of the surface forbida the completion of seedling trans-plantation in tho nursery, while thousands of sturdy gums, Oregon pines, cuprcasus macrocarpa, etc., 'are being retained at lXrfieid in the hope cf being able to allot them their permanent places on the ground becoming moist. Some 367,000 trees have been planted out.
