FORESTRY LEAGUE.

PLANTATIONS INSPECTED. An instructive day was spent yesterday by members of tho South Island Committee of the New Zealand Forestry League in inspecting the City Council's plantations at tho Bottle Lake Reserve and the Rawhiti Domain at New Brighton, under the guidance of Mr E. H. Andrews, chairman of the City Council R«senves Committee, and Mr James Young, Superintendent of City Parks and Reserves. The visitors spent a couple of hours at Bottle Lake, and were impressed with tho importance of the work undertaken there by the City Council in the.direction of transTorming otherwise barren land into what should be proflucing a good revenue in the near future. •Subsequently an al fresco meal was served beneath some pine trees. In expressing thanks to the Reserves Committee for its hospitality, Mr James Deans, president of the Forestry League, said that members had spent a profitable time inspecting the plahta-. tions. Cr. Andrews, replying, said that the Reserves Committee, was ing to do its best to''meet the demand for a reduction iu rates by growing trees. The committee might not live long enough to see the results of its work, which was to build up something for the City of Christchurch. The money that was being spent to-day, however, with that purpose. in (view, would, he felt sure, be returned to the Oountl one hundredfolk. The work involved many problems, but the Committee considered it was proceeding on tho right lines. Whether or not this was so, time alone would tell. From Bottle Lake the party proceeded to the Rawhiti Domain, where they were met by Mr J. Gamble, Mayor of New Brighton, who conducted them through it. The most interesting point of inspection was natural rejuvenation of pinus insignis, a large area of which was destroyed by fire some thirteen years ago, the outbreak being prevented from spreading by the good work of the local residents.

Subsequently a number of the party visited tho reserve at Pleasant Point.
