SUMNER.

The Sumner Borough Council met last night. Present—Tho Mayor (Mr W. 11. Nicholson) and Crs. C. M. Roswell, H. W. Harris, 1\ Dick, J. H. Thomas, I\ C. Cooper and H., C. Jones.

The Standing Committee's report was as follows:—Gas .manufactured during the month of August showed an increase, of 34,500 cubic foot over thai of tho correlesponrdng month of 1923, tho figures being: August, 1023, U76,000 cubic feet; August, 1924, 1,010,500 cubic feet. Tho booster ordered from Messrs' Butche- and Co.- of vv emngton, had been received and was being fitted. Eighteen new electric light poles had been erected on tho Usplanade. The transformer had been cleaned and dried, and two new connexions installed. Tho ■water jHunped from the wells during tho month was 3,600,000 gallons. On tho manager's requisition the purchase of a British thermal unit recorder, costing £35, Jiad been authorised, and tie committee- recommended that a small building' be erected ■which -mould provide the necessary -washing facilities for the stokers. As tho alterations at Alexandra terrace had been completed it had been decided' to install another street lamp. The financial statement showed a bank overdraft of £1537 15s sd. At the request of the Chief Electrical .Engineer, it was decided to draw the attention of electrical consumers to the danger of altering or interfering in any way with 'wires or other electrical equipment. The request of tho St. Saviour's Guild for the Counoil to remit tile rates on. tho Babies' Homo was declined. An application from Mr "VTiddowson to consent to an alteration of easement through his property at Scarborough was granted. An application from the St. Saviour's Guild to erect a, building in poilite was granted. An application for permission to build a Yorandah on tho Esplana'do was declined.

An application for an extraordinary supply of water from the high pressure main on Clifton was declined. Advice, was received that authority •would not be granted to raiso the Kedcliffs sewerage loan at a, higher rate of interest than 5i per cent. A Kedcliffs resident having refused to' allow tho surveyor to fix the line of scwor, tho town clerk was instructed to take tho necessary eteps, -under tho Municipal Corporations Act. 1920. It was decided to call a meeting of tho ratepayers owning .land between Colenso street and tho hills to consider tho report on tho proposed sewerage scheme. The data of the meeting was .fixed for Thurs-. day, October Oth. The widening of tho bridge over the creek at Heberden avenue was authorised. • An -application was received from the Technical College authorities with Tcgard to the annual donation of £lO, and this was granted. . , Correspondence vas received from the Lifeboat Brigade, together with the balancesheet. It was agreed that'a letter of thanks bo sent to tho Brigade in appreciation of the work done during tho yoar. Air E \V Booth wrote offering to lecture on'the"roKd problem It was decided to inform Mr Booth that tho Council regretted its inability to accept his offer.
