SPORTING.

'Acceptances for the Gcraldine Racing Club's Spring Meeting are due today. Acceptances for the Napier Park Racing Club's Spring Meeting are due to-day. Acceptances for the Kurow Jockey Club 's Spring Meeting are- due tomorrow. Alter the Farewell Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday an enquiry was held into A. Peart's action in taking Songbird across tho field. The rider mentioned was reprimanded. Tho following are re-handicaps for tho Manawatni Hunt Club's Meeting: To Mata Hurdles, Bonrbrook list 51b; Kairanga Handicap, Happy Days Sst 131b, Tussore Bsfc 101b. , On Saturday, at Avondale, A. Tinker, who rode Alfort in the Henderson Handicap, was suspended for a month for careless riding, and H. Wiggins was fined £5 for riding without a skull cap.

The Australian-bred horse Illumination has been a bargain for his present owner, Mr D. Brophy. Ho was bought at a reasonable figure after competing at the Summer Meeting at Ellerslio last season, and though only making his presence felt twice since then, he has won two valuable stakes, the Cornwall Handicap at the A.R.C. Winter Meeting and the Plumpton Handicap at Avondale yesterday, and has thereby probably shown a handsome return on his purchase price.

Tuahino, by Lucullus-—Persis, the winner of the Avondalo Guineas yesterday, only raced three times late last season, and her form was more than fair, as she registered a first, a second, and a. third. She is one of Mr A. B. Williams's team trained by J. H. Jefferd, who also owns and trains Landbird, the winner of the Kingsland Hurdle Handicap at tho northern fixture yesterday. Master Boon's position in tho speculation on the Avondale Guineas comes as a surprise to followers of form. Last season the Lucullus gelding raced with remarkable consistency, and in ten races registered one win, five seconds, arid a third. After winning at the Summer Meeting at Takapuna he carried plenty of weight in his various engagements, and it was from then on that he was responsible for hia placed performances. Master Doon is owned and trained by D. P k Moraghan, who for several years was established at Riccarton as a public trainer^

The Avondale track is particularly suited to smart beginners and some of the winners of past Avondale Stakes have not shown good form after winning that valuable event. In Automne the Gisborne owner-breeder Mr D. J. Barry seems to Lave a juvenile that will keep his end up in later classic engagements, for his form on the first day was verified by another good win in the Nursery Handicap yesterday, in which race he was.meeting practically the same field and was conceding weight to all of them.

All three placed horses in the Avondale Guineas yesterday were by the imported horse Lucullus. This sire was lived in Germany, and is by the English Derby winner Ard Patrick from Lucca, a winner of the German Oaks. Even, considering that the fields at Otaki on Saturday and yesterday were not above average dimensions for a country fixture, the form was remarkable for its consistency.- Dual winners at the meeting were Clarinda, Imperial Spark, Rose of Athens, Bonena, and Happy Days, while horses that were in the money each day included Bonibrook, a first and a second; Miss Hupana, first and third; Koauau, first and third; Kalakaiia, two seconds; Kilfaire, two seconds; Saiamis, two seconds; Star Ranger, second and third; Last Crust, second and third; Cleasanta, second and third; and Goldpieec, two thirds. Our Auckland correspondent telegraphs that odd numbers had. a very successful sequence at the Avondale races on Saturday. In race after race horses carrying odd numbers were first and second, and when the field was saddled up for the last race only one competitor carrying an even number had returned a dividend, the exception being Landbird, in the Grey Lynn Hurdles. Those patrons whose gambling is influenced by such happenings commented on this, and while many stuck to odd numbers, others took even in the last race on the chance of the law of averago proving true. In thia case it did, for both first and second horses carried an even number, sis and two respectively.

R. E. Thomson, aged 20, received sever© internal injuries with slight concussion while riding in. the Kingsland Hurdles at Avondale yesterday, General Rose falling and' rolling on him. He is in hospital in a serious condition. H. Wiggins was in trouble again at Avondale yesterday, and having made two engagements in error to ride in the Guineas, was called before the committee, who decided that he should ride Sandstar.

H. Gray was fined £lO at Avondale yesterday for breaking his engagement to ride Town Banks in the Guineas. AUSTRALIAN NOTES. /BT CABLE —FBESS ASSOCIATION —COPTBKJHT) (AUSTKAIJAN AMD JT.Z. CUBLB AfISOCUTIO*.) SYDNEY, September 22.

The "Sydney Morning Herald," commenting on' Gloaming's performance in the Bull Slakes, eays:—Probably age had more to do with, his defeat than Bedonia, who somewhat interfered with him. He cannot be espected to retain for ell timo the brilliancy ho' Bhowed ia the- days that have gone by.

Farceur and Snnny Loch 'were among the starters in the Camellia Stakes on Saturday.

Heroic's absence from the Rosehiil Guineas was explained by his owner as due to the fact that the horso .was skittish, and he did not' want to risk the Derby favourite's journey through the city streets, whichi a visit tc>'Rosehiil would; hare necessitated.

MR KNIGHT'S FORM OF PROTEST (bt cable—press association—copyright) (ACSTEAUAK ASD K-Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) (Received September 22nd, 7.55 p.m.) . SYDNEY, September 22. In view of his win on Saturday, a hope was expressed that Mr 11. A. Knight might revoke his decision to send Ballymcna back to New Zealand before fulfilling his engagements at the Randwick Spring Meeting.

Mr Knight, however, said Ballymena would leave for home on Friday unless the unexpected happened, and he had no reason to expect that it would, meaning -unless the Australian Jockey Club Committee reopened the Royal Despatch case. . It is understood Mr Knight's action is a protest against the disqualification of F. D. Jones and M. McCarten, in both of whom he expresses the utmost confidence.

The opening event, the Kingsland Hurdles, drew a field of eleven, of which Miss Mickey was the public fancy, Landbird, Prince Rufus, and the bracket Mies Melra. and Te Tahi being' next in demand in that order. From the barrier rise Landbird cot tho pace, and taking: hi 3 fences in fine style always had tie field doing their best, and his superior cdndition stood to him, and ho won nicely by a length and a half. Prince Rufus made a good effort from the straight entrance, but the Hawke's Bav horso -was too 6clid. Te Tahi finished oil well two lengths behind Prince Rufus in third place. Peter Amaas, who was behind the field in the earlier stages, was fourth, running on well. Miss Mickey fell at the last fence, and General Rose« at the five furlongs post. The Nureeiy Handicap drew a nice field of fourteen two-year-olda. Lady Cavendish, on the strength of a change of riders, H. Gray being her pilot to-day, was made a good favourite, being better backed than the bracketed pair Automnt and Golden Autumn, with Mimetic, Father O'Flynn, and Adavalc next in demand. There- was very little delaj at tio barrier, Automne, tbo Avondale Stakes winner, being the %-st to show out when they settled down, though Predominate was the rirsfc to move, but could not hold his position. Automne was first into tho straight, where he was challenged by Lady Cavendish, King Ln, and Gold Acre. The first-named, despite his rise in weight, was too solid for his opponents, and defeated Lady Cavendish by three parts of a length, with King Lu half a length away third. Adavale was fourth. The Avondale Guineas drow a very evenlooking field of sixteen runners, and backers distributed their support a good deal, barring Subjection, who was a. solid favourite, Muscari, Motley, Glengarriff, and Tuahino being backed in that order. The start was a good one, tho field getting* awaj- in a- line, but Son o' Mine was squeezed bade. Tnahine and Chairman ehowed the way for a time, and then Subjection was taken to the front, with Chairman and Motley his nearest attendants, Tua-hine being always in a, good position, and the reet of tho field

strung oul. The order was muck the same to tho straight entrance, -where the field bunched, and a good struggle ensued when heads were straightened lor home Master Doom was in front half a furlong from home, and then Tuahino, Lady itewa,' and Dazzling Light challenged and a great race. ensued, tho verdict going to Tuaiine by a head, with the sama distance separating blaster Boon, Lady Kewa, and Dazzling Light. The last-named was carried wide entering tho straight, and finished under the judges box, and this cost her the race. , Tho fen carded went to tao post for the Piumpfon Handicap. Rnapapa being made a warm favourite, with Landslide, Illumination, Broadwood, and Polonctt supported in that order. Landslide was th*> quickest to find his foot, and ho made the pace a cracker, being well clear as the stand -was passed the first time. He continued to show the way ic th« 6traight entrance, where the field bunched, and a good raco ensued to the post. Illumination, who came on tho outside,' had tho moasuro of Landslide at the distance, and going on won by a length from Illumination, who was haJf-a-lcngth in front of Euapapa. Polonott, who was badlv placed earlier m tho race, finished up well in fourth place. There was a largo field for tho Mount Albert Hack Welter, twenty-ono going to tho post. P.afa was backed down to a Fhort price, being much better supported thnn Princess Ronnie, the next choice, with Praiseworthy and Highflown nerf in tho betting. Kafa. was ono of tho first to begin, and was eoon dear of his field, and gave nothing a chance at any stage winning comfortably by a length and a, half. Princess Ronnie was always well placed, and although disappointed when trying to get up on tho rails, camo through, and was second, half a length in advance of General Pirdo, who was alow to begin, bat jut in a great run in tho straight. Tall Timber showed pace, but was hampered by the big field. Gold Fern was prominent for a good part of the journey. 'Hie President's Handicap was contested by a field of fourteen sprinters, Soliform being the first choice, with Miss Egypt, Kino- Merv, and Eoyal Blood tho next in order of fancy. Finelli, who is always recognised as a quick beginner, was first to find her feet, and eho Boon put a break on tho field, and was well clear entering tho straight, where her nearest attendant* were Dan' Quin and King Merv. Once heads were straightened for homo a groat battle ensued, but the Finland mare- stuck to her task well, and won by a bare neck from the faat-finishing Master O'Rorke and Royal Blood, who were only heads apart, with Town Bank another head away fourth. *

Tho New Lynn Handicap, run over nine furlongs, was contested by a field of fifteen, Lapidary being heavily supported, with Potoanui, Barometer, Knighthood, and Tactician backed in thai, order. Potoanni was in the lead passing the stand the first time, and then Rosinanto wag in front for a, timo, only to bo supplanted by Potoamii again. The latter led into tho straight, but ho could not hold his position when challenged by Lapidary, Stool Bar, Tactician, and Tresillian, and an excellent finish resulted in favour of Steel Bar by a head from Tactician, who was tho eanio distance in front of Tresillian, with Lapidary a head away The curtain was rung down on the Meeting with tho Nihotapu Welter, for which there was a field of fourteen. Bright Day, who had tho services of H. Gray, was made a very wann favourite, Doleful _ Ditty, I'Amour, Many Colours, and Aerofortis 'being also supported. iSmoko Concert was the early leader, showing the way to the straight entrance, where tho field, which, had been strung out, closed up, aad a- fine struggle was witnessed. A hundred yards from the post Gold Bain waa in front, but Gray, who had ridden a patient raco on Bright Dav, fairly lifted -his mount, and just snatched a head victory cm tho post from Gold Rain, with Peter Maxwell a. head awny .third. Smoko Concert was fourth a head aivay, and Aerofortis was close up.
