An old colonist, Mr Thomas Turner, died' on' Saturday. • 'He was born in Eathow,' Scotland,' im 183-7, and came to New .Zealand in the ship Mersey in 1860, . when •he settled.'; in ; Christchurch, and for some years held positions with Dr. Lily, of Papanu'i, and Mr Andrew Duncan and. Mr.Moore, of Glenmark. He then started in, business in Colombo street, as a seedsman, where ho' was well'known and greatly respected. He retired ■ from business 20 years ago. He was one of the first members of Knox Presbyterian Church, but was unable to attend for some years owing; to . failing sight, and he was almost blind for the last two years. His 'wife' predeceased him'by r 16 years. Ho leaves three daughters—Mrs J. Paul-(Wellington), Mrs H. W. Giddings (Christcbuxch),.and Mrs M. C. Cooper (Christchurch). ...

Captain' John Nelson, an old identity in Napier shipping circles, died on Friday.' The late Ca.ptain ■ Nelson had been associated with the firm of Riehardson and • Company, • Port Ahuriri, since IS7B, and served in. their, ships in all ratings from before the mast' to master, and was. best known as master of the Euru, which he commanded for a considerable period, He rehired from the sea in 1921, and was in his 75th year at the lime of his death. He leaves a widow, one son, and two daughters.
