FORESTRY SCHOOLS.
CRITICISM IN HOUSE. (SFicuii to "rax txui.") WBLLEVGTON, September 20. The decision of the Government to establish two Schools of Forestry, one at Auckland and the other in Canterbury, was subjected to some criticism in the House of Representatives early this morning.
Mr T. K. Sidey said he was quite sure there was not room in the Dominion for two Schools of Forestry which TTOuld take tho students up to the degree standard. One school was deemed to be ample for tho whole of Australia. It was a sheer waste to have two colleges, for the students could not bo kept in full employment. Tho Prime Minister said the matter had been given serious consideration for 6c-rae time. It was an arrangement between the university authorities and tho Government. He had been impressed with the tremendous advantage that would result. A voice: How much money is involved? TI Mr Massey: "£3OOO per year. ' He was sure the scheme would work out all right. Very considerable time had been gpent in working out tie details. Mr J. MeCombs asked whether the university authorities were of opinion that two schools should be established, and that the proposal was in tho best interests of forestry. Was the decision a compromise because the Government was not prepared to make a There Trould be only a few students of forestry in tho whole of tho Dominion. Mr Massey: If members only say the word I will cut them both out. The Leader of the Opposition: Why do that? Mr Massey: "Because there is so much grumbling about it." He could not agree that tho two schools would not be required. Mr H. E. Holland: I want to offer a solution of the difficulty. If neither Auckland nor Christchurch want tho Forestry College, then I would suggest, that the Prime Minister should establish it where the best forests in the country arc —over on the West Coast. (Laughter.)
