CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION. The annual report of tho Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association states that inter-club competitions were keenly contested between the several clubs during the season, and tho Association had been successful in all three of its interprovinciol matches. Fourteen asphalt courts had been laid, each having its umpire stand : and twelve being provided with an adequate number of seats for the comfort of players and spectators. ASHBURTON CLUB. j The annual rtxxirt of the Ashburton | Tennia Club says that during the season a number of foreign matches were played, ; the club's teams acquitting themselves very well. A number of junior matches were also < played aguinst Te Marae and Tinwald clubs, . and although the club was not always victorious, the matches were very pleasant. 1 Considerable keenness was shown during ( last season's tournaments. Championships and handicap* events showed good entries ! and splendid enthusiasm. The following were the results of the various, tournaments: Men's championship singles, Partridge; doubles handicap, Lindop and G. Bonmngton; men's singles handicaps, Partridge; ladies' championship singles, Miss Stewart; doubles handicaps, Misses Undrill and Cowan; ladies' . single handicaps, Miss Percy; .Yankee tourncv, Miss Percy and Partridge. The Gala cup competitions again attracted much interest, and the club was | successful in canturing three of the four ' trophies. The ladies* open singles were won j by Miss Stewart, the men's open singles by I Partridge, and the men's junior singles by |G. C. Bonninpion. During the season the ! club had been"unfortnnate in losing the services of Messrs Holford, Porter and Kawnsley who had been active members for some considerable time, and their loss would be keenly felt. The secretary, Mr P; Vesty, had also left the district. The grass courts had been ploughed' and resown and should be available for play shortly after Christmas. The asphalt courts were not in very good playing order and consequently were not well patronised. Tho oommittee had considerable difficulty in having matters m connexion with the last-mentioned courta attended to, but fox the coming Beason they hoped they would be in good order. As regards the balance-sheet, members would note that the season .commenced with a credit of £24 12s 9d, and finished up with a balance of £32 183 9d, an increase of £3. Against this credit balance, however, an amount of £lB 10s was outstanding for the season's trophies, and £24 was owing to the Domain Board in connexion with the work done on the three jjjass courts* The actual receipts were £123 63 lid, and the expenditure £lls Cs lid. Thanks were due to Messrs Robert Bell, H. F. Nicoll, and F. W.
