The discovery is officially announced as a result of experiments and of the chance discovery that a patient who was being provided with insulin for daily injections was neglecting the , treatment. The patient was found to be temperamentally unfit to receive injections of insulin, but made no objection when given glycerine as a daily diet in balanced dosea. The patient, who was about to die from neglect of insulin, made prompt recovery after taking glycerine, and is now back at work on half-time.
