FIVE BOYS INJURED.
MOTOR ACCIDENT AT WAIPARA. Five schoolboys were injured, one seriously, in a motor-car accident at Waipnra yesterday at midday. As a result Archibald McPherson is in the Christchurch Hospital suffering from a severe scalp wound and James Antill is in the Waikari Hospital with a bad wound on his leg. It is stated that a three-seater car was being driven by Mr James Davis, of Nelson, through Waipara tit 12.30 p.m. when a boy, who was riding a bicycle, crossed suddenly on to his wrong side. The motorist swerved to avoid him find knocked down four schoolboys who were standing on the side of the road.
j The hoys and their injuries were:— i Archie MePhoreon, aged 11, both thighs bruised, injury to left elbtuv, bruised left shoulder, laceration behind left ear and on right cheek, slight scalp wound and probably fractured skull. Sent to Christohurch Hospital. Stewart Ferguson, twed 13, left knee grazed, scalp wound left side and wound above left eye. Sent homo. Jack Laredo, left knee lacerated .and 'brjiised, left temple lacerated. James AntiH, aged 10, wound on outer side of loft leg near knee joint .about 6in long down to the muscles Sent to Waikari Hospital. Jack Treloar, both knees bruised. Bant home. The driver of the oar attributed the accident to the failure of his brakes. On n test of the brakes being made it was found that the emergency briike was useless, and the foot brake had little effect in checking the speed of the car. The injured lads were taken into Mra DWs store and treated by a nurse nil Ih-. Will, of Rangiom, and Dr. Uarapbell, of Vv aikari, ax rived. The motorist gave all the. aid he could and remained in "Waipara last night. Last night McPherson was reported to be in an improved condition.
