UNEMPLOYMENT IN GREYMOUTH.

PRIME MINISTER TO ENQUIRE. (SPBCIAL TO "TEE PBB8B.") WELLINGTON, August 13. '* ■ In the House of Representatives this afternoon, 2ir J. O'Brien brought up the-question "of the unemployed- at Greymouth. He referred to a paragraph in the Christchurch "Press," which.stated that a contractor for clearing a section hard received nearly .100 applications for the work. There • 'we're, Mr O'Brien stated, several very 'urgent public works about to be put in hand at Greymouth, and he asked the Prime Minister if these could be started immediately, so that the unemployed 'might obtain work. He par- - trenlariy referred to the new police sta- , tion" and additions to the Technical ißahool and the railway yards. Mr Massey said it would have been better if the hon. member had directed Ms question to the Minister of Works. So far as he: cbnld ascertain, there had Jjeenno provision made by way of ap■propriation for these works. He was vsot quite sure about the last one, but the first two had not yet been agreed to-by-Parliament. Parliament had to agree before the money became available/ and the Public Works Estimates would not be considered until very • much later in the session. However, he wonld be glad to look into the question, but be could not even promise to rceommend the Minister to put those works on the Estimates.
