ATTEMPTED ESCAPE. (spzcuj. to "ess pksss."/ I GBEYMOTTTH, August 13. : A prisoner in the Westport gaol was discovered in the act of removing some of the boards from the inside of his cell, apparently with the intention of making an attempt at escape.
"Mining Matters. Two miners in the "Wareatea mine were seriously injured through a fall of coal, one having both legs broken. They were removed to the Denniston Hospital. There was nc work at the Blackball, Paparoa, and State mines to-day, Owing to a shortage of shipping, the Blackball mine has been closed down since last Wednesday, and it is understood it will be idle to-morrow also, as the miners are now holding a meeting for the purpose of drawing up demands for a new award. Mr T. L. Felton, who has occupied the position of stationmaster at Greymonth sinee 1920, was entertained last evening by a large gathering of railwaymen. Mr J. Pearson, who presided, presented Mr Felton, on their behalf, with a leather suit-case and Eversharp pencil. In responding, Mr Felton said that it was his intention to settle down in Christchurch, after spending a few months' holiday in various parts of the Dominion. The death occurred at the Grey Bive'r Hosnital to-day of Mrs Margaret Finlay, of Kunanga. The deceased, who was 88 years of age, and a native of Ireland, had been ailing for a long period. She is survived by two sons and one daughter.

'The Buller representative Rugby team will be chosen from the following to play Golden Bay for the coveted Seddon Shield on Saturday: Forwards: Allen, Tunnicliffe, Stuart, Schadick, McLean, Grice, Lockey, Ford, Goodall and Watson; backs, Griffiths (Capt.) 1?. Davis, S. Davis, Corby, Thornton, Keams,-Booth and Ryan."
