RAKAIA.

The monthly meeting of the Rakaia School Committee was held on Monday. Present: The Rev. A. S. Morrison (chairman), the Rev. E. N. Blakiston, Messrs J. England, A. Kennett. A. A. Oliver, and C. Evison. The headmaster's report showed a roll number of 144. with an average attendance of 132. A letter was received from the Canterbury Education Board statins that the Board and the Education Department would each pay one-third of the cost of installing electric light in the school residence. It was resolved that the committee should pay the remaining third. The Education Board also notified that the most urgent works requirrd at the residence would be done shortly. Final arrangements were made for the concert by .Mr Claverhill's concert party on September 4th.

Owing to illness, and to several members being out of the district, the Mttendance at the lost shoot of the Rakaia Miniature Rifle Club was not <=o laret- as usual. Cromie won. „,.,,., Though this year tne Rakaia ladies \ hockey team was beaten in the final game for the Gala Cup, and also in the six a-side tournament, yet there is much consolation for these losses in j the record of very fine games played, of defeat onlv after the most gruelling contest.?, and now, also, in the success of the juniors in winning the junior six a-side tournament. The winning team comprised Hilda Shannon, (oaptain), Mabel Tatterson, Alice 1 Thompson. WOODGROVEL In connexion with the concert given by the pupils of the Mason's Flat school, a. correspondent writes that great credit was due to the children and the infant mistress (Miss Willett) for the great success of. the function.

RANGIORA. In a hockey match between the girls of the Rangiora and Southbrook Schools, played yesterday afternoon, the former iron by 8 goals to nil. -

Forty players were present at the l'ortnightly card social in the Bowling-, Tennis, and Croquet Club's social room on Monday evening. Prises presented by Mr and Mrs W. E. Horreil were won by Mrs D. K. Blake and Mr V. Smith, while the consolation prizes were awarded to Miss O'Connor and Mr J. Kinky.

The fimoral of the late Mr J. Hughey took pluce yesterday afternoon, and was very, largely attended. Over 30 motorcars and 12 horse vehicles, besides a large number ot cyclists jind pedestrians, followed the hearse- from his lars home to the Presbyterian cemetery. The cortege was preceded by members of the Eangipra Oddfellows •' and Orange Lodges, • of which bodies deceased was a member. The services sit the graveside were conduct?:! by the Key. "\V. 11. Howes, and Mr C. W. Bell rend the Oddfellows' service. Wreaths .were sent by Mr and Mrs ,T. Kinley, Mr and Mrs Pickering, Mr J. Blake. Mr and Mrs W. St.trgesa, Mr T. A. Bullock, Mr and Mrs W. Smith, Mrs Hamilton, the Presbyterian Girls' Bible class, and the little Busy Bees, besides a large number of family wreaths'. The N.G., Bro. W. A. Horreil, presided "over a large attendance of members at the regulnr meeting of the Loyal Eangiera Oddfellows' Lodge on Monday evening, when nineteen brethren from the Loyal Ohoka Lodge were also present. Reference was made to thj death of Brother J. Hughey, who had been a member of tho Lodge for 42 years, mid a motion of sympathy -svith liia widow and family was passed. Correspondence was received from the health inspector, detailing work required to be done to the hall. ■ The matter was referred to the Hall Committe. An application for the use of seats by the War. Memorial Committeo was granted, but owing to the hall being engaged, another request for tables was declined. It was resolved to accept the challenge of the Loyal Oust Lodge to a return card match on August iiStli. Sick pay and aceounts amounting to £9.1 os 6d were passed for payment. At tho conclusion of the business a card inateh was played, Eangiora defeating Ohoka by t)7B points to 874. The visitors wore afterwards entertained at supper, when musical items were givaii by Brothers E. C. Horsier, E. H. Trollope, and G. Eidout, Bros. A. Cooper and A. Q. HumribeU playing the accompaniments. Bros. C. I. Jennings and A. Cooper also contributed humorous stories.

GBEENDALE. The Sunday School connected with tho Groendale Baptist Church held its anniversary services ou Sunday and Monday. Tho Sunday services, which were well attended, vera conducted by the Eev. L. Barbour, of Opawa, whose addresses wero most appropriate to the occasion, and of an inspiring character, Tho scholars gave good service by the 1 singing of special hymns. On Mondayevening toa was provided in the schooli room by the ladies of the church, and ( a large company partook of the good things provided. The annual meeting was held in the church, when Mr C. H, Adams, auporintendont, presided over a crowded congregation, and was supported on the platform by tho Eev. 0. Burnet, L. Barj bour, and W. H. A. Victory, each giving an address dealing wih some aspect of Sunday school work. The annual report, presented by Mr Adams, was of a moat encouraging character, showing an increase in the number o£ scholars, which now stood at 50, the highest during his sloven' yoars of superintended)-. The financial statement told of liberal contributions to the Missionary Society and the Mauurowa Children's Home. A comprehensive vote of thanks waß moved by Mr W. Taoge to all who had assisted in making the services so successful, and was carried with acclamation. A special feature of tho evening was the distribution of ' prizes, each scholar receiving a book. The children's programme was as follows: —Recitation, "When I was at the Partv," Doris Adams; chorus, "As Jesus Does," scholars5 recitation, "A Difference/' Ivy Burrows; song, "Close to Jesus," elder scholars; recitation, "The Discontented Husband," Mavis Adams; recitation, "A Bunch of Golden Keys," Frank Musgrovc; recitation, "Three Littlo Pugs," Bessie Bnntcn; recitation, "Eggs to Market," Yera Frow; chorus, "An Invitation," older scholars; recitation, "Creation of Woman," E. Dennis; recitation, "Crows in tho Cornfield," Ken "Victory; chorus. "Selected," Bible Class girls; recitation "Going ou an Errand," Howard Holland; dialogue, "The Obtrusive Hat," Biblo Class girls; recitation, "The Owl Critic," Bernard Lord; goodbyo chorus, the scholars. Miss Of. Adams presided at tho piano, and Miss M. E. Giddings at the organ.
