PERSONAL. Constable Excell, who has been stationed in Ashburton for eight years, has been transferred to take charge of the Kaitangata station. General News. The results of the Tecent St. John Ambulance first aid examination for men have been received by the secretary. Of Dr. C. J. S. Fisher's class of I 23, 14 entered for the test, which was conducted by Dr. J. Eussel "Wells. All qualified. Mr C. S. Hawkey secured the medallion award for passing three examinations, and Mr H. M. Jones a voucher for two. The other twelvo obtained certificates. The following qualified: Messrs C. S. Hawkey (medallion), H. M. Jones (voucher), C. Alington, W. Bruce, C. Corbett, B. Ford, H. Members of the Christehureh Savage Club passed through Ashburton by tho express yesterday afternoon for the south. They were met at the station bv. members of the Ashburton Savage Club. The Christehureh Club raided the Timaru hapu last evening, and will journey on to Dunedin to-day. Football. To-day the Hurunui Sub-Union representatives will visit Ashburton to moot the local representatives in a Southbridge Shield fixture. The game is expected to be the best of the season, as J the visitors are credited with having an exceptionally strong side. Methven, and Wanderers B will meet Wakanui at Wakanui. Advance Ashburton Association. A meeting of the Fire Brigade, Athletic Club, and the Advance Ashburton Association was held on Thursday to discuss matters in connexion with the Labour Day gala and provincial fire brigades' demonstrations Mr W. Kerr presided. Mr H. R. C. MeElrea said that preliminary steps would have to be taken in connexion with the organisation. The next gala must be bigger than the last, and he hoped each individual would do his best to help tho gala along. Mr A. A. McDonald was of the opinion that the expenses had been rather heavy last year. A. large amount of the expenditure could be eliminated this year. The election of an organiser and a secretary was held over till a general meeting at which the public will bo present. The following provisional committee was set up: Messrs E. H. Orr, T. Speaking to Mr J. E Broadfoot. chief postmaster, Christehureh, yesterday, on rural mail matters, the Ashburton representative of "The Press" was informed that the Department was making every endeavour to cope with the increasing demand for daily mail services in the country districts. A number of petitions had been received with suggested* routes for the opening up of various districts in Ashburton, and Mr Broadfoot said the time was opportune for country districts to forward their petitions. .Ashburton was the "centre of a large district which was going ahead by leaps and bounds, and he would not be at all surprised ta see a most efficient service in operation in the future. • 'A number of rural schemes had been advanced at the opening ceremony of tho Springburn post office, which, he said, would have to be looked into, but he expressed a wish that petitions be forwarded.
