EDMONDS. \ very old colonist, Mr John Thomas Edmonds, of C 22 Madras street North, died on Tuesday at the age of 85 years. Mr Edmonds was born near Penzance, Cornwall, and came to I New Zealand in the ship Tip Tree, arriving at Lyttclton in January, 1864. He was employed'for some years managing the Hcathcote and Hoon Hay quarries, amongst his work being the quarrying of the foundation stono of I the Christchurch Cathedral, the huge 1 stone which formed tho base of Godlev's statue, and tho two stones which formed the original Lady Godlcy's wellon the Bridle path. Mr Edmonds then joined the firm-of W. Goss and Co.. afterwards being in business on his own account, retiring about twenty years ago. Mr Edmonds, was a kcon Methodist, and held mnny important offices in the Durham street Methodist Church. The deceased was widely known.for his genial manner, and in business for his absolute integrity. The funeral took place at Barbadoes street Cemetery _on Wednesday afternoon, tho service being conducted nt the house by the Rev. Arthur Hay and at the gravesido by the Rev. Canon Staples Hamilton. Mr Edmonds is survived by one soil—Mr G. Edmonds —and threo daughters Mrs W. B. Austin (Sheffield), Miss Lily Edmonds, and Mrs T. Harris (Radley)*

In 1907 ho returned to New Zealand, and took up farming at Tawa .Flat;, later removing ito - Levin. ;
