CONCERNING MATERNITY. TO THE EDITOR OP "THE PEXSS." Sir, —As one who has been'through the mill, may I say that to me some of tho remarks made by the Minister of Health and the Director-General of Hospitals regarding maternity are almost ridiculous. The Minister of Health says that Nature's methods arc unfortunately considered out of date in these days. Does he also consider it out of date to wear clothes? And does he have his teeth out without gas?* Nature surely never meant him to wear clothes or go to a dentist. I was present at the opening of a new maternity hospital in Geraldine, where he said, "God gave woman a little (?) pain and saw that it was good for her to suffer." I understand that in the beginning Nature did not mean woman to suffer as she does now, so when did God decide she must commence to suffer for her good? Dr. Valintine says "Maternity is a natural process," but from more than one experience let me assure him it is a most unnatural process in these overcivilised days. The Minister of Health says it will be a good day for New Zealand when it is realised that a doctor is only necessary to see that things are going right. Quite lately a friend of mine in a maternity hospital in a wellknown centre was left to Nature's methods, with the result that she was so ill that she never left her bed for two months, and has the prospect now of a serious operation in a few months' time. She and many others in these hospitals ztc not even allowed the doctor to see that things are going right. Did she "receive the proper attention" referred to by Dr. Valintine in his speech to the IVaipawa Hospital Board? —Yours, etc., SOUTH CANTEEBUEY.
