BRITISH CHARGE DES ARCHIVES IN MEXICO.
(by cable—press association copyright.) (Australian" an"d n.z. cable association.) . " ; MEXICO CITY, Juno 15. The Foreign' Office had issued a strongly-Worded statement of the roasons for the expulsion from Mexico of Mr Herbert Cummins, -British Charge des Archives. - '. .; ' The statement assorts that Mr Cummins for years has been persona non grata with the Mexican Government, which openly accuses him of lack of respect and courtesy and even with wilfully incorrect statements to his Government when reporting local incidents. Mexico twice asked Great Britain to recall Mr Cummins, but the British Government supported its representative, until finally Mexico decided that he must be expelled, claiming that he is not a diplomat, but a private person. The statement concludes by saying that Mexico is eager to renew friendly relations with Great Britain, but must have an acceptable representative, who will observe diplomatic customs, [Mexico last week severed relations with Great Britain by ordering the expulsion of Mr Cummins, who hid in the British Legation, which was surrounded by police waiting an opportunity to convey formal notice tf expulsion. Friction between the British and Mexican Governments was said to have been caused by a number of letters written by Mr Cummins to friends in England, using terms and descriptions that injured the dignity of Mexico. The officials gained access to' these letters and gathered other proofs purporting to show that Mr Cummins made continued efforts to create friction between the two Governments.]
