TEKAPO SCHEME.

CITY COUNCIL'S ATTITUDE.

Reference to South. Canterbury criticism of the Christchurch City Council's hydro-electricity policy was made by the Eteputy-Maytar (Cr. A. McKellar) at last night's .meeting of the Council. He said that it had: been contended at a recent meeting of South Canterbury electricity consumers that the Christchurch City Council was opposed to the Tekapo scheme. "I do'not think it is right," said the Deputy-Mayor, "that this Council should be accused oi taking up such an attitude. I suggest that we frame a motion to the effect that we are not opposed to the Tekapo scheme, but are prepared to help them in that direction. (Hear, hear.) At the pame •time, so far as Christchurch is concerned, we consider that "Waimakariri is the best scheme for the future of Canterbury." He then moved:. "That this Council wishes it to be known that whilst convinced that the Waimaka-rf-ri (scheme is the most suitable source of supply for the. future requirements of Christchurch, it has no desire or intention of opposing the Tekapo scheme or any other scheme which Timaru might consider most suitable for its requirements." Cr. E. J. Howard seconded the motion. He said that if the Mayor had not been absent on account of illness he would have moved that the Council send a deputation to Timaru to explain the Council's attitude towards fhe two schemes. The time was ripe in Timaru for an explanation to be made. If they did not do something thyv would be misunderstood in Timaru and' meet with opposition again as thev had met it in the past. The motion was carried nnanimously.
