PERSONAL.

(special to "the press.") GREYMOUTH, June 16. Messrs T. E. T. Seddon, P. H. Morey, and G. R. Harker have been appointed members of the committee of the Grey Patriotic Association. Messrs W. Howie, F. Bennett, and H. McKeown were tendered a social by the Westland Football Association on Saturday evening. Mr W. Balderston presided. Members paid tributes to the services rendered by the guests, who have all been prominent in the control of the game, and Messrs Howie and Bennett were each presented with a. wallet of notes. Mr Howie, who ia ii\ the employment of the Crown Clothing Company, leaves for Christehurch tomorrow and Mr Bennett, local manager for the same company, also leaves tomorrow by the express, his destination being Dunedin, where he will have charge- of the branch. Mr McKeown, who was presented with a case of pipes, will also be entertained at the Hibernian Hall on Friday evening. He leaves on Saturday on transfer to Addington, where he will occupy a,' position on the office staff of the railway workshops foreman. Messrs Bennett and McKeown presented trophies to the Association to be competed for during the season. Mr E. Airey was elected president of the Association, Mr Bennett having formerly occupied that position. Totara Flat. In reply to urgent representations made by the Grey County Council for a grant of £SOO to repair the protective works at Totara Flat, the county clerk received" to-day a letter from the Minister of Public Works regretting that he was unable to accede to the request in view of the fact that the land was freehold property, and the likelihood of damage by flood's in the Grey River was not considered great. Whitebait. A small shoal of whitebait was seen yesterday in the Cobden Lagoon, where large numbers of inanga shoals have been noticed recently. Death of a Chinese. Two young men who were cycling along the old Marsden road yesterday, at a distance of about eight miles from Greymouth, had their attention attracted by the dilapidated apptnraiico of an old hut occupied by a Chinese who took part in the early gold rushes. An investigation was made with a result that the Chinese was found dead at the side of the hut, lying in a hole dug in the ground. His death was probacy due to heart failure, and the police do not regard the circumstances as suspicious. The deceased had no relatives in Greymouth, and the local Chinese do not know his name. An inquest will'bo held to-morrow morning. No Work Offering. When asked to-day as to the prospects of newcomers looking for work, Mr S. Tyson, in charge of the Government Employment Bureau, said that there were fewer men applying lately and less positions to bo filled. There was a, mild rush of men seeking work about ten days ago, but they had moved on, and there were very few callers to-day. All of the positions Mr Tyson 'had to offer were away from the Coast. Kugby Football. Landing had a decisive victory over Cronadun yesterday, scoring 19 points to their opponents' 6. For Landing, C. and A. McElwee scored two tries each, and 0 'Regan scored one and converted two. Hunter scored for Cronadun and Wylic kicked a penalty goal.' Mr Dick was referee. -•-■ ' * The match between Waiuta and Pirates, at Waiuta, resulted in a draw —six points each. Mr Rodden was referee. West Coast Centre. The fortnightly meeting of the West Coast League Centre was held tonight. Present —Messrs A. H. McKano | (in the chair), J. Parkes, W. Parsonage, S. Thomas, J. Richardson, W. Hopkins, C. F. It was resolved that no reclassifications be granted after to-night's meeting. - .. , The rules were amended in the direction of allowing players to be elected as club delegates. The treasurer presented'a statement showing a satisfactory financial position. The Blackball Club lodged a protest against Runanga seniors being awarded the match played at Blackball on June 18th. A lengthy report was received from the referee, who protested against the conduct of several of the spectators and a player. ! The official time-keepers stated that the game had been interrupted by spectators, who declared that time was up. The letter from the Blackball Club stated that the time had been exceeded. On the motion of the chairman the protest was not entertained. It was also resolved to request a Blackball player to appear before the Centre to explain his conduct towards the referee.

A vote of confidence in the referee and timekeepers was passed. H. W. Brown was granted reinstatement.

The action of the Emergency Committee in making application for the use of the recreation ground on Sundav was approved. The secretary of the Trotting Club wrote granting the use of Victoria Park for the match against the English team. The application of L. Adams for reclassification to the Junior Grade was refused. The Gr'eymouth Club was granted permission to hold a ball on the occasion of the English visit. Correspondence was received from the New Zealand Council in connexion with the English team's visit. A discussion • took place with regard to the Dunollio ground.' It was resolved to ask for an apology from a person who, it was alleged, had insulted the gatekeepers. Correspondence was received from the New Zealand Sports Protection League with regard to a deputation to the Prime Minister regarding the remission of the amusement tax. The secretary was instructed to write to the Brunner Club, asking it to take part in the knock-out competitions. It was stated that the club was being resuscitated. Blackball Third Grade was awarded a forfeit against Kunanga. It was resolved in future to inflict a fine on clubs defaulting without reasonable excuse, each case to be taken on its merits. The secretary was appointed to act with Mr Laurence in selecting referees. It was resolved to play a match between, a team composed of probable

representatives and all comers at the Greymouth recreation ground on June 28th. The secretary was instructed to write to the police, asking them to suppress betting on the results of matches. The various clubs were recommended to supply timekeepers with a-bell. It was resolved to thank the Runanga Band for its services. Mrs H. Campbell -was appointed a vice-president. J. Griffen and L. Cooper, of the Greymouth Club, were granted reclassification. The secretary was instructed to write to the New Zealand Council asking it to call a conference at Christehurch during the visit of the English team. The following are the fixtures for the week-end:— Seniors—Marists v. Greymouth, at Cobden, Sunday, 3 p.m. Juniors—Hovers v. Runanjra, at Dunollie, Sunday, at 3 p.m; Blackball v. Nelson Creek, at Blackball, at 3 p.m.; Greymouth v. Marists, at Greymouth recreation ground, Saturday, at 3 p.m. Fourth Grade—Runanga v. Marists, at Dunollie, on Sunday, at 1.30 p.m. Sunshine and Rain. For the week ending 'on Sunday there were 138 points of rain at Hokitika and 40 hours of sunshine. An Arrest. A young man was arrested in Greymouth to-night, and will be charged with the theft of an overcoat. Personal. The death took place on Saturday morning at the Buller Hospital of a pioneer in the person of Mr James Hackett. Deceased, who was about 80 years of age, was a native of Ireland, and had been a resident of New Zealand for 00 years. He was not married. *Coal Exports. For the week ended June 14th the Westport Coal Company shipped 8607 tons 15 cwt of coal, wd the WestportStoekton Coal Company' 2410 tons. Buller Rugby Union. At a meeting of the Buller Rugby Union a Pirate junior was suspended for one playing' fixture for questioning the referee's decision, and a Rival senior for a similar offence was suspended for two playing Saturdays. A Sergeant's Hill player was suspended for the remainder of the season for using bad language on the field, and refusing to leave' when ordered to do so by the referee.
