THE HUTT ROAD.
EXTENSION OF NEW SURFACE PROPOSED. (press association telegram.) WELLINGTON, June 9. The Hutt Road Extension Act was discussed by the Wellington Automobile Club to-day. It was stated that the formation of the road just laid at the Hutt should be extended, there being 35 .miles which could be undertaken at a total cost of £182,000. So far.as local bodies were concerned, it was held that they should not be relieved. The proposal was that their constitution should ba based on tneir present obligations on those particular roads. The figure was placed at £2OO per mile per year for local authorities. Where the road went through the highways districts, the Highways Board should be asked to contribute, as under the Highways Act, £ for £, it was also sought to secure a larger representation for the City Council on the new Board for these particular undertakings, giving them controlling authority. Individual representatives agreed to this and after some opposition it was suggested that provision should b» made for a marine drive. It was stated that Auckland received a grant of £60,000 for six miles of road.
