COAL FOR RAILWAYS.

A FOXTON REQUEST. (PUSB ASSOCIATION TELEGBAM.) WELLINGTON", March 4. Messrs J. Linklater, M.P. (chairman of the Foxton .Harbour Board), J. A. Nash, M.P., and E. H. Crabb (Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce) waited upon the Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister of Railways, this afternoon to urge that in calling tenders for coal for the Railway Department up-country depots, the Government should invite tenders for supplies through Foxton port, so making it worth while for coal steamers to trade between Foxton and Westport. Mr Linklater maintained that this would mean cheaper coal not only for the Department, but for the boroughs of Falmerston North, Levin, and Foxton, also for the dairy factories and other industries.

The Minister replied that the difficulty was to get regular and adequate supplies of Now Zealand coal suitable for the railways. Ho had suggested an enquiry by representatives of the mine-owners and Government as to the means of overcoming this difficulty. Mr Crabb: Will you leave it open for people to tender for the supply of coal through Foxton if they like? The Minister: There is no difficulty about that.
