The Legislative Council is delaying the passage of the Appropriation Bill granting new supply to the Government, and, as a result, when temporary Government employees went for wages on Saturday they were informed that no money was available to pay them. The State Shipping Department will probably be abolished at the end ot the month, and all officials have been notified that from the end! of the month their services will not bo required. [Towards the close of last year Tasmunia appealed to the Commonwealth for increased financial assistance to save her from bankruptcy. At present the Federal Government pays £85,000 annually to Tasmania. In presenting his Budget last month, the State Premier (Mr Lyons) estimated that the total deficit on June 30th next (including last year's loss) would ■be £595,000. He proposed new taxation to raise £128,000; but the State's financial position was still desperate. Further reorganisation of .department's and additional economies were essential.]
