CHURCH UNITY.

PASTORAL BY CARDINAL BOURNE.

(BT CABLE— J-HESS ASSOCIATION COPTHIOEt.) (AC3TBALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.)

LONDON, March 3,

Cardinal Bourne (Roman Catholic Archbishop of Westminster), in a Lenten Pastoral, referring to the unity of churches says;— "Our attitude is one of intense sympathy, manifested in constant and fervent prayer for the restoration of England to the unity of Christendom. Unfortunately some are not prepared to give ub credit for tliis eympathetio attitude. We speak commonly of churches, but really there is. only one church for the truth is there is no church exoept the Holy Apostolic Church with the centre of its authority in the See of Rome, which even claims to realise the promises which Christ made for His Church. We believe that to the Roman C&tholic Church, both iii its episcopal hierarchy as a whole and in its visible head personally, there is granted an infallibility whereby it has divine assurance of protection against error if and when it proclaims that any doctrine is to be held as part of the faith revealed by Christ. This is the fundamental doctrine of the Catholic Church. All discussions are mere waste of time until this doctrine i 8 accepted."
