TRAMS AND TRAINS.

CONNEXION AT HOLIDAY TIME. Correspondence that has passed between the Tramway Board and the Railway Department on the subject of trams connecting with holiday, excursion, and picnic trains was read at yesterday's meeting of the Tramway Board.

The General Manager of the Tramways, writing to the Traffic Manager of the Railways, stated that on holidays early morning tram trips were cut out with the result that on several ocasions —notablv on Food Friday, Labour Day, and Boxing Day, and New fear s Day —no trams were run to connect ivitn early trains. While recognising that the raiiwav authorities had their own problems, it was suggested that it mi"ht be possible to start the trains a little later as the tramway authorities had no desire to make special timetables on holidays. Mr J. B. Mitchell, Traffic Manager, N.Z.R., replied that it was a matter of regret that holiday and excursion trainsTcould not wait on some occasions for the arrival of the first trams, and it had been felt that the railway revenue had suffered in consequence; but these trains could not run later, and tbe Department had.to put up with any loss of revenue. Every endeavour was made to get the return trains home to connect with the last trams.

Mr Geo. T. Booth asked how much earlier the trams would have to start running in order to connect with these early trains. The General Manager (Mr Frank Thompson) said that in some cases they would have to start half an hour earlier, and in others even earlier. If the Railway Department ran excursions regularly everv public holiday, it would be worth the Board's while to make the necessary arrangements. Mr Booth suggested that the matter might be worth looking into in order that some arrangements might be made to meet the requirements of the public.

It was decided to ask the General Manager to report on the matter.
