At tho Ashburton School Baths on Saturday morning a little girl fully clothed fell in at the deep end, together with threo other girls in bathing costume. All except one small girl got out, and a momber of tho Ashburton Swimming Club, who was on the scene at the time, effected a smart rescue. About ninety rods wero out at the mouth of the Kangitata river at the week-end. One angler landed ten nice trout, the heaviest scaling 101b. The quinnat salmon were running up-stream freely and fast. Mr Ward, of Waitaki," who had been camping at' the mouth for about a fortnight, managed to land two, which were in the pink of condition. One weighed 211b and the other 241b. Three salmon were also landed on the Timaru side of the river. There wero large congregations both morning and evening at St. Stephen s Anglican Church on Sunday, when tho Rev. J. F. Wiseman conducted the harvest thanksgiving services. The choir, numbering 45, led tho Binging of the special psalms and hymns, and sang Jackson's "To Deum" in the morning. The church was nicely decorated for tho occasion. There was quite an innovation at the close of the evening service, when the vicar's churchwarden, Mr D. Wood, by special request, stood on the chancel steps and addressed the largo congregation on the financial position of the church, and made an earnest, appeal for special contributions to enable the vestry to meet the position.

The Main Highways Question. The Automobile Association is contemplating holding a meeting at Ashburton at an early date to consider the whole question of the main roads, which will be coming under the provisions of tho Highways Act. It is intended to invite tho members of the County Council to be present and to take part in tho discussion, so that full advantage can be taken of any benefits which may accrue after the Act comes into force on April Ist. The County Council has determined to do what it can to have the Ashburton district constituted a separate area, but it is understood that the Automobile Association considers that much benefit might result from a conference between the two bodies, and that a broader outlook may be taken when its views are placed clearly and forcibly before the County Council.
